高行者，梁之寡婦也。其為人榮於色而美於行。夫死早，寡不嫁。梁貴人多爭欲取之者，不能得。梁王聞之，使相聘焉。高行曰：「妾夫不幸早死，先狗馬填溝壑，妾宜以身薦其棺槨。守養其幼孤，曾不得專意。貴人多求妾者，幸而得免，今王又重之。妾聞：『婦人之義，一往而不改，以全貞信之節。』今忘死而趨生，是不信也。見貴而忘賤，是不貞也。棄義而從利，無以為人。」乃援鏡持刀以割其鼻曰：「妾已刑矣。所以不死者，不忍幼弱之重孤也。王之求妾者，以其色也。今刑餘之人，殆可釋矣。」於是相以報，王大其義，高其行，乃復其身，尊其號曰高行。君子謂高行節禮專精。《》云：「謂予不信，有如皎日。」此之謂也。 |
| | Gao Xingzhe was a widow of Liang. She was honored for her appearance and admirable in conduct. Her husband died early, and she did not remarry as a widow. Many noble people of Liang vied to take her in marriage, but none succeeded. The King of Liang heard about this and sent an official envoy to propose a marriage alliance. Gao Xing said, "My husband was unfortunate enough to die young; even his dogs and horses have filled the ditches. I should offer my body as a covering for his coffin." She raised her young orphan, never allowing herself to focus on anything else. Many nobles sought to take me as a concubine; I was fortunate enough to escape, and now the king honors me again. I have heard: 'The righteousness of a woman is to remain steadfast without change, in order to preserve her chastity and faithfulness.' To forget death and seek life now would be an act of unfaithfulness. To see nobility and forget humility would be to lack chastity. "To abandon righteousness for the sake of profit is not to be a human being." She then took up a mirror and a knife, cut off her nose, and said, "I have now been castrated. The reason I did not die was because I could not bear to leave my young and vulnerable orphans behind. Those who sought me as the king's concubine desired me for my beauty. Now that I am a disfigured person, it is likely they will release me." The official then reported this to the king. The king greatly admired her righteousness and respected her conduct, so he restored her status and honored her with the title Gao Xing. The gentlemen said that Gao Xing was a woman of virtue who remained devoted to propriety and sincerity. As the "Poems" say: "If you doubt my faithfulness, let the bright sun bear witness." This is what that means.

| | Ode: Gao Xing lived in Liang, devoted to chastity and sincerity. She did not covet noble status but was committed solely to faithfulness. Refusing the king's proposal, she maimed herself by cutting off her nose. The gentlemen held her in high esteem, setting an example for future generations.
