其妻出戶,曾子弔之。上堂,見先生之尸在牖下,枕墼席稿,縕袍不表,覆以布被,首足不盡斂。覆頭則足見,覆足則頭見。曾子曰:「邪引其被,則斂矣。」妻曰:「邪而有餘,不如正而不足也。先生以不邪之故,能至於此。生時不邪,死而邪之,非先生意也。」 |
| | She came out of the house, and Zengzi condoled with her. They went upstairs, and saw Master Xiansheng's corpse lying under the window, with a brick as a pillow and straw mat for bedding; his padded robe was not worn on the outside, covered only by a cloth quilt, and his head and feet were not fully wrapped. If they covered his head, then his feet would be exposed; if they covered his feet, then his head would be exposed. Zengzi said, "Tilt the quilt diagonally, and it will cover him completely." His wife said, "Rather than being askew with excess, it is better to be upright even if insufficient." Master Xiansheng was able to reach this state precisely because he did not act improperly. "He lived uprightly, and now we treat him improperly after death; that would go against Master Xiansheng's wishes."

曾子不能應遂哭之曰:「嗟乎,先生之終也!何以為諡?」其妻曰:「以康為諡。」曾子曰:「先生在時,食不充虛,衣不蓋形。死則手足不斂,旁無酒肉。生不得其美,死不得其榮,何樂於此而諡為康乎?」其妻曰:「昔先生君嘗欲授之政,以為國相,辭而不為,是有餘貴也。君嘗賜之粟三十鍾,先生辭而不受,是有餘富也。彼先生者,甘天下之淡味,安天下之卑位。不戚戚於貧賤,不忻忻於富貴。求仁而得仁,求義而得義。其諡為康,不亦宜乎!曾子曰:「唯斯人也而有斯婦。」君子謂黔婁妻為樂貧行道。《》曰:「彼美淑姬,可與寤言。」此之謂也。 |
| | Zengzi could not respond and instead wept, saying, "Alas! The passing of Master Xiansheng!" "What title can he be given as a posthumous name?" His wife said, "Let his posthumous title be Kang." Zengzi said, "While Master Xiansheng was alive, he did not have enough food to fill his belly, nor clothes sufficient to cover his body. After death, his hands and feet were not properly wrapped, and there was no wine or meat by his side. He did not enjoy comfort in life nor honor in death; what joy could he have found in this to be posthumously titled 'Kang'?" His wife said, "In the past, when the ruler once wanted to entrust him with political power and appoint him as a national minister, he declined it. This shows an abundance of noble virtue. When the ruler once bestowed upon him thirty zong of grain, Master Xiansheng declined and did not accept it; this shows an abundance of wealth. That master was content with the bland taste of the world, at ease in its humble positions. He did not anxiously worry over poverty and low status, nor eagerly seek wealth and honor. Seeking benevolence and attaining benevolence; seeking righteousness and attaining righteousness. To bestow upon him the posthumous title of Kang is not also appropriate! Zengzi said, "Only such a man could have such a wife." The gentlemen considered Qianlou's wife to be joyful in practicing the Way with virtue. "The Book of Songs" says: "That beautiful and virtuous lady, one can speak earnestly with her at night." This is what it refers to.

頌曰:黔婁既死,妻獨主喪,曾子弔焉,布衣褐衾,安賤甘淡,不求豐美,尸不揜蔽,猶諡曰康。 |
| | Ode says: After Qianlou died, his wife alone took charge of the funeral. When Zengzi came to console her, he saw him wrapped in a cloth robe and wearing coarse clothes; she was content with low status and bland food, not seeking richness or beauty. Though the corpse was not fully covered, they still posthumously honored him as "Kang."
