Mu Ji was the wife of Duke Mu of Qin, the daughter of King Xian of Jin, and the elder sister of Crown Prince Shen Sheng. She shared the same mother as Shen Sheng but had a different mother from Duke Hui. She was virtuous and righteous. King Xian killed Crown Prince Shen Sheng and drove away the other princes of the royal family. Duke Hui, whose personal name was Gongzi Yiwu, fled to Liang. After King Xian died, he was able to ascend the throne with the support of Qin. Soon after ascending the throne, Mu Ji sent a message urging him to bring back the exiled princes and said: "The royal clan is the root of the ruler." Duke Hui did not follow her advice and also betrayed Qin by offering bribes. When Jin suffered from a famine, it requested grain from Qin, and Qin gave it to them. When Qin suffered from a famine and requested grain from Jin, Jin did not give any. Qin then raised an army to fight against Jin and captured the ruler of Jin before returning. Duke Mu of Qin said, "I will clean the ancestral temple first; I intend to present the ruler of Jin there."

Upon hearing this, Mu Ji went with Crown Prince Ying and Gongzi Hong, along with her daughter Jianbi, wearing mourning clothes and walking on firewood to welcome [the ruler]. She also told Duke Mu: "Heaven has sent a calamity, causing the two rulers to meet not with jade and silk but through war. "As your concubines and sisters-in-law, we have failed to teach each other properly, thus bringing disgrace upon Your Majesty's command." "The ruler of Jin will be brought in for an audience in the morning; I, your humble servant, shall die by dusk." "Please consider this carefully, Your Majesty." The duke was frightened and thus released him to Lingtai. A high official requested that he be brought in, but the duke said: "Capturing the ruler of Jin would have been a great achievement to return with; now I am returning with a funeral instead. What use is there for it!" He then changed his treatment of the ruler of Jin, housed him in a guest hall, and sent him away with seven sets of sacrificial offerings.

After Mu Ji died, her younger brother Chonger entered Qin and was sent by Qin to Jin, where he became Duke Wen of Jin. Crown Prince Ying, thinking of his mother's kindness and sending off his maternal uncle, composed a poem saying: "I am sending my maternal uncle; he is going as far as Weiyang. What can I give him?" "A cart with yellow horses for the journey." The virtuous men said: "A kind mother gives birth to a filial son." The Book of Songs says: "Reverence and caution in dignity and decorum are the standards for the people." This refers to Mu Ji.

Eulogy says: The wife of Duke Mu of Qin was the elder sister of Duke Hui of Jin. When Qin captured the ruler of Jin, Lady Mu wept bitterly and was pained that she could not save him. She then prepared to die, but Duke Mu, moved by her righteousness, released his brother [the captured ruler].
