趙將馬服君趙奢之妻，趙括之母也。秦攻趙，孝成王使括代廉頗為將。將行，括母上書言於王曰：「括不可使將。」王曰：「何以？」曰：「始妾事其父，父時為將，身所奉飯者以十數，所友者以百數。大王及宗室所賜幣者，盡以與軍吏士大夫。受命之日，不問家事。今括一旦為將，東向而朝軍吏，吏無敢仰視之者。王所賜金帛，歸盡臧之。乃日視便利田宅可買者。王以為若其父乎？父子不同，執心各異。願勿遣。」王曰：「母置之，吾計已決矣。」括母曰：「王終遣之，即有不稱，妾得無隨乎？」王曰：「不也。」 |
| | The wife of Zhao's general Machifu Jun Zhao Sha was Zhao Kuo's mother. When Qin attacked Zhao, King Xiaocheng sent Zhao Kuo to replace Lian Po as general. Before he was about to depart, his mother submitted a petition to the king and said: "Zhao Kuo cannot be entrusted with command." The king asked, "Why so?" She said: "At first I served his father. When his father was a general, he personally provided meals to more than ten people and befriended over a hundred." "The gifts of money bestowed by the king and the royal family were all given to the military officers and gentlemen." "On the day he received his orders, he never inquired about family affairs." "Now that Zhao Kuo has suddenly become a general, he faces east to receive the military officers, and none of them dares to look up at him." "The gold and silk bestowed by the king are all stored away at home." "He daily inspects convenient fields and houses that can be bought." "Do you think he is like his father?" "Father and son are different; their minds and intentions differ." "I beg you not to send him." The king said, "Madam, please leave it be; my decision is already made." Zhao Kuo's mother said: "If the king insists on sending him, and if he proves unworthy, may I not be held responsible?" The king replied, "No."

括既行，代廉頗。三十餘日，趙兵果敗，括死軍覆。王以括母先言，故卒不加誅。君子謂括母為仁智。《》曰：「」此之謂也。 |
| | After Zhao Kuo departed, he replaced Lian Po. Within more than thirty days, the Zhao army was indeed defeated, and Zhao Kuo died with the annihilation of his forces. The king, because Zhao Kuo's mother had previously spoken out, did not ultimately punish her. The gentlemen considered Zhao Kuo's mother to be both kind and wise. "The Book of Songs" says: "The old man is earnest, the young man is arrogant; it is not that I am senile and speak foolishly, but you take my words as a joke." This is what is meant by that.

She wished to stop him but could not; she requested punishment for herself instead. When Zhao Kuo died at Changping, his wife and children were allowed to survive.
