孟子·万章下》:君一位,卿一位,大夫一位,上士一位,中士一位,下士一位,凡六等。
The Ruler again constituted one dignity; the Chief Minister one; the Great Officers one; the Scholars of the First Class one; those of the Middle Class one; and those of the Lowest Class one - altogether making six degrees of dignity.
礼记·王制》:诸侯之上大夫卿、下大夫、上士、中士、下士,凡五等。

He carries out with deference the measures springing from his excellent qualities and rectifies him (only) to save him from what are evil. Hence, as the superior and inferior, they are able to have an affection for each other."
扬子法言·》:立政鼓众,动化天,莫尚于中和。
In establishing government, rousing the multitude, and influencing the world, nothing is superior to the harmony of the mean.
