生平

沈約出自吳興沈氏，「江東之豪，莫強周、沈」，其父沈璞在宋文帝元嘉末年皇族爭位時，因忠於弒父自立的太子劉劭，被起兵討逆的宋孝武帝劉駿誅殺。

沈約幼年因身為罪臣之子，流寓他鄉，少時篤志好學，母恐其積勞成疾，常為之減油滅火，早上讀書，晚上還要複習一遍，遂博通群籍，擅長詩文。仕劉宋、蕭齊、蕭梁三朝，許多重要制詔都是出自他的手筆。在宋仕記室參軍、尚書度支郎。在齊仕著作郎、尚書左丞、驃騎司馬將軍，為文惠太子蕭長懋家令，「特被親遇，每直入見，影斜方出」。

齊梁之際，為蕭衍擬定即位詔書，蕭衍重之，稱讚說，「生平與沈休文群居，不覺有異人處；今日才智縱橫，可謂明識。」封建昌縣侯，官至尚書左僕射，後遷尚書令，領太子少傅。梁武帝認為沈約為人輕脫，故沈約雖官至宰相（尚書令），但卻沒有參與機密的實權，晚年更激怒梁武帝，被梁武帝痛責不是忠臣，沈約因此戰慄憂懼而死。

另外沈約的治國才幹也頗受當時統治者質疑，齊武帝、齊明帝就曾在不同場合，說出「學士輩不堪治國」、「學士輩不堪經國，唯大讀書耳。經國，一劉係宗足矣。沈約、王融數百人，於事何用」等類似評價。

及後協助梁武帝蕭衍進行篡位大計，參與廢殺齊和帝的計劃，晚年更因此事而精神恍惚，夢見齊和帝索命，大呼禪代不是自己的主意，未幾斃命，享年七十三歲。朝議請賜諡為文，梁武帝改為一「隱」字以貶之。

作品

從20餘歲時開始，歷時20餘年，撰成《晉書》120卷。487年，奉詔修《宋書》，一年完成。另著有《晉書》110卷、《齊紀》20卷、《梁武紀》14卷、《邇言》10卷、《謚例》、《宋文章志》30卷、《四聲譜》等，皆佚，僅《宋書》流傳至今。嚴可均《全上古三代秦漢三國六朝文》輯其遺文8卷，作品由張溥輯入《漢魏六朝百三家集》。

四聲八病

沈約是永明（齊武帝年號）詩壇領袖作家，撰《四聲譜》，使詩歌產生人為音律，而醞釀律詩之試作，沈約說：「欲使宮羽相變，低昂互節，若前有浮聲，則後須切響，一簡之內，音韻盡殊；兩句之中，輕重悉異。」還提出了「八病說」，即「平頭、上尾、蜂腰、鶴膝、大韻、小韻、旁紐、正紐」八種聲律上的毛病。其四聲八病說，一時附和者頗多。不過，八病在沈約之著作中已不可考，只有《文鏡秘府論》與《續金針詩格》中有詳細的記載。

沈約主張「文章當從三易：易見事，一也；易識字，二也；易讀誦，三也。」，注重音調流暢的美感，但沈約本人並未完全做到。沈約還精研佛經，可說是一名通才。邢子才稱沈休文：「沈侯文章用事不使人覺，若胸臆語也。」沈德潛評論沈約不如鮑照、謝靈運，「然在蕭梁之代，亦推大家，以邊幅尚闊，詞氣尚厚，能存古詩一脈也」。

軼事

元人伊世珍的筆記小說《瑯嬛記》記有一位書生名叫沈休文，一日有仙女用雨絲所紡成的輕紗送給了他。沈休文後來把冰絲做成衣裳和扇子。

此外沈約還是中國曆史上著名的美男子之一，以「沈郎瘦腰」聞名，沈約曾任東陽太守，他在給友人的信中提到自己的臂圍每月都減少半分，南唐國主李煜曾在詞句中以「沈腰潘鬢消磨」，做為借代文人消瘦的典故；納蘭性德【採桑子】提到「東陽瘦」，也出自相同的典故。

沈約亦是女詩人沈滿願的祖父。

Poetry

Shen Yue was known for his love of poetry. For example, he wrote a set of poems, called by Burton Watson the Six Poems on Remembering, describing his beloved during six times of the day. The Six Poems on Remembering get fairly close to being specifically erotic, which is rather unusual for Classical Chinese verse (at least as it has been handed down). The verse on remembering her when she sleeps includes the lines:

::::::she blushes under the candle's glow.

Contributions to literary theory

Shen Yue was one of the most import writers in terms of contributing to the ideas behind much of later Classical Chinese poetry.

Contributions to Regular Verse tonality theory

Shen Yue apparently was the initial developer of the theoretical basis for the development of tonality in relationship to regulated verse. This would become crucial to certain forms especially associated with poetry of the Tang Dynasty, such as the lüshi (poetry).

Yuefu

Shen Yue is also credited with being the first to apply the term Yuefu in a generic sense to the Han Dynasty ballad style poetry, as opposed to the earlier meaning of referring to the Yuefu, or the Han imperial Music Bureau

Book of Song

Shen Yue was largely responsible for writing and compiling the Book of Song, a history of the Liu Song Dynasty. One of the most important sections on this is his Treatise on Music.
