墨家 -> 墨子 -> 卷十二 -> 公孟 -> 13

子墨子曰問於儒者：Mozi asked a Confucianist
「何故為樂？」 why the Confucianists pursued music.
曰： He replied,
「樂以為樂也。」 music is pursued for music's sake.
子墨子曰： Mozi said:
「子未我應也。 You have not yet answered me.
今我問曰： Suppose I asked,
『何故為室？』 why build houses.
曰： And you answered,
『冬避寒焉， it is to keep off the cold in winter,
夏避暑焉， and the heat in summer,
室以為男女之別也。』 and to separate men from women.
則子告我為室之故矣。 Then you would have told me the reason for building houses.
今我問曰：Now I am asking
『何故為樂？』 why pursue music.
曰：And you answer
『樂以為樂也。』 music is pursued for music's sake.
是猶曰『何故為室』？This is comparable to: "Why build houses?"
曰『室以為室也』。」 "Houses are built for houses' sakes."
