道家 -> 莊子 -> 外篇 -> 田子方 -> 3.2

仲尼曰：Zhongni said,
「惡！可不察與！ 'But you must try and search the matter out.
夫哀莫大於心死， Of all causes for sorrow there is none so great as the death of the mind
而人死亦次之。- the death of man's (body) is only next to it.
日出東方而入於西極，The sun comes forth in the east, and sets in the extreme west
萬物莫不比方。 - all things have their position determined by these two points.
有目有趾者，All that have eyes and feet
待是而後成功，待晝而作。wait for this (sun), and then proceed to do what they have to do.
是出則存，When this comes forth, they appear in their places;
是入則亡。when it sets, they disappear.
萬物亦然， It is so with all things.
有待也而死，They have that for which they wait, and (on its arrival) they die;
有待也而生。they have that for which they wait, and then (again) they live.
吾一受其成形， When once I receive my frame thus completed,
而不化以待盡，I remain unchanged, awaiting the consummation of my course.
效物而動， I move as acted on by things,
日夜無隙， day and night without cessation,
而不知其所終， and I do not know when I will come to an end.
薰然其成形， Clearly I am here a completed frame,
知命不能規乎其前， and even one who (fancies that he) knows what is appointed cannot determine it beforehand.
丘以是日徂。 I am in this way daily passing on,
吾終身與汝交一臂而失之，but all day long I am communicating my views to you; and now, as we are shoulder to shoulder you fail (to understand me)
可不哀與！ - is it not matter for lamentation?
女殆著乎吾所以著也。 You are able in a measure to set forth what I more clearly set forth;
彼已盡矣， but that is passed away,
而女求之以為有，and you look for it, as if it were still existing,
是求馬於唐肆也。 just as if you were looking for a horse in the now empty place where it was formerly exhibited for sale.
吾服女也甚忘，女服吾也亦甚忘。You have very much forgotten my service to you, and I have very much forgotten wherein I served you.
雖然，女奚患焉！But nevertheless why should you account this such an evil?
雖忘乎故吾，吾有不忘者存。What you forget is but my old self; that which cannot be forgotten remains with me.
