伐木丁丁、On the trees go the blows zheng-zheng;
鳥鳴嚶嚶。And the birds cry out ying-ying.
出自幽谷、One issues from the dark valley,
遷于喬木。And removes to the lofty tree,
嚶其鳴矣、While ying goes its cry,
求其友聲。Seeking with its voice its companion.
相彼鳥矣、Look at the bird,
猶求友聲。Bird as it is, seeking with its voice its companion;
矧伊人矣、And shall a man,
不求友生。Not seek to have his friends?
神之聽之、Spiritual beings will then hearken to him;
終和且平。He shall have harmony and peace.
