淮南說之用，不如太史公之用也。The Huainanzi's teaching is not as the useful as the Shiji.
太史公， In the Shiji,
聖人將有取焉； a sage will find things he can use;
淮南、鮮取焉爾。 the Huainan rarely has things he can use.
必也， Inevitably,
儒乎！ what he selects to use must accord with the Confucian Dao!
乍出乍入，Now he's coming, now he's going
淮南也；—that's the Huainan.
文麗用寡， Elegant literature that is rarely useful,
長卿也； that's Sima Xiangru.
多愛不忍，Having many interests and not content to leave out anything
子長也。—that was Sima Qian.
仲尼多愛， Confucius had many interests,
愛義也； but his interests all revolved around yi.
子長多愛， Sima Qian had many interests,
愛奇也。 but he was interested in the unusual.
