梁鴻字伯鸞,扶風平陵人也。遭亂世,受業太學,博覽不為章句。學畢,乃牧豕上林死中。曾誤遺火,延及他舍,鴻乃尋訪燒者,問其所去失,悉以豕償之。其主猶為少,鴻又以身居作,執勤不懈。鄰家耆老見鴻非恒人,乃共責讓主人,而稱鴻長者。於是始敬異焉,悉還其豕,鴻不受而去。歸鄉里,執家慕其高節,多欲女之,鴻並絕不娶。同縣孟氏有女,狀醜,擇對不嫁,父母問其故,女曰:「欲得賢如梁伯鸞者。」鴻聞而聘之。及嫁,始以裝飾入門,七日而鴻不荅,妻乃下請,鴻曰:「吾欲裘褐之人,可與俱隱深山者爾!今乃衣綺縞,傅粉墨,豈鴻所願哉?」妻曰:「以觀夫子之志耳。妾自有隱居之服。」乃更為椎髻,著布衣,操作而前。鴻大喜曰:「此真梁鴻妻也,能奉我矣。」字之曰「德曜孟光」。居有頃,乃共入霸陵山中,以耕織為業,詠詩書彈琴以自娛。仰慕前世高士,而為四皓以來二十四人作頌。因東出關,過京師,作五噫之歌。肅宗求鴻,不得,乃易姓運期,名燿,字侯光,與妻子叵齊魯之間。有頃又去,適吳,居皋,伯通廡下為人賃舂。每歸,妻為具食,舉案齊眉,伯通察而異之,乃方舍之於家。鴻潛閉著書十餘篇,疾且告主人曰:「昔延陵季子葬於嬴博之間,不歸鄉里。慎勿令我子持喪歸去。」及卒,伯通等為求葬地於吳要離冡傍。

宋武帝受禪,追尊皇考為「孝穆皇帝」,皇妣為「孝穆皇后」。策曰:「維永初元年七月,皇帝謹遣某官某,奉策上皇考尊號曰『孝穆皇帝』。仰惟聖靈,邈焉阻遠。昔有周丕崇,祚興昌季,其在魏晉,亦申情禮,所以聿追來孝,所因者本。謹稽式上代,考諸令準,稱謂既極,情典攸遂。所以仰順天人,俯穆率土,在心遠慕,庶云有慰。」追尊先后策曰:「維年月朔,皇帝謹遣某官某,奉策上皇妣尊號曰『孝穆皇后』。伏惟皇妣,資坤厚之性,體母儀之德,等美姜嫄,齊列任姒,訓穆中閨,化流自遠,膺曆運期,饗茲天位。謹依前典,敬奉大禮,仰慕聖善之愛,俯增蓼莪之思。」

When Han Yin saw Lu Bu, he said, "My master has an immense respect for you, Illustrious Sir, and he desires to ensure perpetual alliance between the two families by a marriage, an alliance such as existed between the ancient states of Qin and Jin."
Lu Bu was well disposed toward the scheme, but went in to consult his wife. Now Lu Bu had two wives and one concubine. He first married a lady of the Yan family, and she was the legal wife. Then he took Diao Chan as a concubine. And while he was living at Xiaopei, he had married a secondary wife, a daughter of Cao Bao. Lady Cao had died quite young leaving no issue. Neither had Diao Chan borne any children. So that Lu Bu had but one child, this daughter, of whom he was dotingly fond.

As has been said, Liu Bei prepared gifts to offer to Zhuge Liang on his visit. One day his servants announced a stranger of extraordinary appearance, wearing a lofty headdress and a wide belt.
"Surely this is he," said Liu Bei, and, hastily arranging his dress, he went to welcome the visitor.
But the first glance showed him that it was the recluse of the mountains, Sima Hui. However, Liu Bei was glad to see him and led him into the inner apartment as he would an old friend.
There Liu Bei conducted him to the seat of honor and made his obeisance, saying, "Since leaving you that day in the mountains, I have been overwhelmed with military preparations and so have failed to visit you as courtesy demanded. Now that the brightness has descended upon me, I hope this dereliction of duty may be pardoned."
"I hear Xu Shu is here. I have come expressly to see him," replied Water Mirror bluntly.
"He has lately left for Xuchang. A messenger came with a letter telling of the imprisonment of his mother."
"Then he has just fallen into Cao Cao's trap, for that letter was a forgery. I have known his mother to be a very noble woman. Even if she were imprisoned by Cao Cao, she would not summon her son like that. Certainly the letter was a forgery. If the son did not go, the mother would be safe; if he went, she would be a dead woman."

His lack of success is simply the will of Heaven, but manifestly he could not bow the knee to anyone."

只見吳道官打點牲禮停當,來說道:「官人們燒紙罷。」一面取出疏紙來,說:「疏已寫了,只是那位居長?那位居次?排列了,好等小道書寫尊諱。」眾人一齊道:「這自然是西門大官人居長。」西門慶道:「這還是敘齒,應二哥大如我,是應二哥居長。」伯爵伸著舌頭道:「爺,可不折殺小人罷了!如今年時,只好敘些財勢,那裡好敘齒!若敘齒,這還有大如我的哩。且是我做大哥,有兩件不妥:第一不如大官人有威有德,眾兄弟都服你;第二我原叫做應二哥,如今居長,卻又要叫應大哥,倘或有兩個人來,一個叫『應二哥』,一個叫『應大哥』,我還是應『應二哥』,應『應大哥』呢?」西門慶笑道:「你這搊斷腸子的,單有這些閑說的!」謝希大道:「哥,休推了。」西門慶再三謙讓,被花子虛、應伯爵等一干人逼勒不過,只得做了大哥。第二便是應伯爵,第三謝希大,第四讓花子虛有錢做了四哥。其餘挨次排列。吳道官寫完疏紙,於是點起香燭,眾人依次排列。吳道官伸開疏紙朗聲讀道:

經曰:「昔者明王之以孝理天下也,不敢遺小國之臣,而況於公、侯、伯、子、男乎。」
【疏】經曰至形於四海。○正義曰:此第二段,序已先世明王,欲以博愛廣敬之道被四海也。○經曰至男乎。○此《孝治章》文也,故言「經曰」。言小國之臣尚不敢遺棄,何況於五等列爵之君乎。公、侯、伯、子、男,五等之爵也。《白虎通》曰:「公者通也,公正無私之意也。《春秋傳》曰:王者之後稱公。侯者候也,候順逆也。伯者長也,為一國之長也。子者字也,常行字愛於人也。男者任也,常任王事也。」《王制》云:「公、侯地方百里,伯七十里,子、男五十里。」至於周公時,增地益廣,加賜諸侯之地,公五百里,侯四百里,伯三百里,子二百里,男一百里。公為上等,侯、伯為中等,子、男為下等。言小國之臣,謂子、男之臣也。

《後漢書》曰:或問汝南范滂曰:「郭林宗何如人?」滂曰:「隱不違親,貞不絕俗,天子不得臣,諸侯不得友,吾不知其他。」
又曰:隗囂素聞杜林志節,深相敬待,以為治書。后因疾告去,囂復欲留,強起,遂稱疾篤。囂意雖相望,且欲復容之,乃出命曰:「杜伯山,伯山,林字也。天子所不能臣,諸侯所不能友。蓋伯夷、叔齊不食周粟,令且從師友之位。」林雖拘於囂,終不屈節。
又曰:趙岐初名嘉。年四十有重疾,臥褥七年,慮奄然,乃遺令敕兄子曰:「大丈夫遁無箕山之操,仕無伊尹之勛,天不我與,復何言哉!可立一圓石於吾墓側前,刻之曰:『漢有逸人,姓趙名嘉,有志無時,命也奈何!』」
又曰:樊曄字子融,有俊才,好黃老,不肯為吏。

又曰:井丹字大春,扶風郿人也。少受業太學,通五經,善談論,故京師為之語曰:「五經紛紛井太春。」性清高,未嘗修刺候人。建武末,沛王輔等五王居北宮,皆好賓客,更遣請丹,不能致。信陽侯陰就,光烈皇后弟也,以外戚貴盛,乃詭說五王,求錢千萬,約能致丹,而別使人要劫之。丹不得已,既至,就故為設麥飯蔥葉之食。丹推去之,曰:「以君侯能供甘旨,故來相過,何其薄乎?」更置盛饌,乃食。及就起左右進輦,丹笑曰:「吾聞桀駕人車,豈此耶?」坐中皆失色。就不得已,而令去輦。自是隱閉,不關人事,以壽終。
又曰:高鳳字文通,南陽葉人也。少為書生,家以農畝為業,而專精誦讀,晝夜不息。妻嘗之田,曝麥於庭,令鳳護雞。時天暴雨,而鳳持竿誦經,不覺潦水流麥。妻還怪問,鳳方悟之。其後遂為名儒。鄰里有爭財者,持其兵而斗,鳳往解之,不已,乃脫巾叩頭固請曰:「仁義遜讓,奈何棄之?」於是爭者懷感,投兵謝罪。鳳年老,執志不倦,名聲著聞。太守連召請,恐不得免,自言本巫家,不應為吏。又詐與寡嫂訟田,遂不仕。
又曰:臺佟,音同,字孝威,魏郡鄴人也。隱於武安山,鑿穴為居,采藥自給。建初中,州辟不就。刺史行部乃使從事致謁,佟載病往謝。刺史曰:「孝威居身如是甚苦,如何?」佟曰:「佟幸得保終性命,存神養和,如明使君奉宣詔書,夕惕庶事,反不苦耶?」遂去,隱逸終不見。
又曰:韓康字伯林,京兆霸陵人。常采藥名山,賣於長安市,口不二價,三十餘年。時有女子從康買藥,守藥價不移。女子怒曰:「公是韓伯林耶?乃不二價乎?」康嘆曰:「我本欲避名,今女子皆知有我。」遂遁入霸陵山中。博士公車連征不至,桓帝乃備玄纁之禮,以安車聘之。使者奉詔造康。康不得已,乃許諾,辭安車,自乘柴車,冒晨先使者發。至亭,亭長以韓征君當過,方發人牛修道橋,及見康柴車幅巾,以為田叟也,使奪其牛。康即釋駕與之。有頃,使者至,奪牛翁乃征君也。使者欲奏殺亭長,康曰:「此自老子與之,亭長何罪?」康因中道逃遁,以壽終。
又曰:「矯慎字仲彥,扶風茂陵人也。少好黃老,隱遁山谷,因穴為屋,松喬導引之術。汝南吳蒼甚重之,遺書以觀其志。慎不答。年七十餘,竟不肯娶。后忽歸家,自言死日,及期果卒。
又曰:馬瑤,矯慎同郡人也。隱於汧山,以兔罝為事,所居俗化。百姓美之,號馬牧先生。
又曰:陳留老父,不知何許人也。桓帝代,黨錮事起,守外黃令陳留張升去官歸鄉里,道逢友人,共班草而言。升曰:「吾聞趙殺鳴犢,仲尼臨河而返;覆巢竭淵,龍鳳逝而不至。今宦豎日亂,陷害忠良,賢人君子,其去朝乎?夫德之不建,人之無援,將性命之不免,奈何?」因相抱而泣。老父趨而過之,植其杖太息而言曰:「吁!二丈夫何泣之悲也!龍不隱鱗,鳳不藏羽,網羅高懸,去將安所,雖泣,何及乎?」二人欲與之語,不顧而去,莫知所終。
又曰:龐公者,南郡襄陽人也。居峴山之南,未常入城府,夫妻相敬如賓。荊州劉表數延請,不能屈,乃就候之,謂曰:「夫保全一身,孰若保全天下乎?」公笑曰:「鴻鵠巢於高林之上,暮而得所棲;黿鼉穴於深淵之下,夕而得所宿。夫趨舍行止,亦人之巢穴也,且各得其棲宿而已,天下非所保也。」因釋耕於垅上,而妻子耘於前。表指而問曰:「先生苦居畎畝,而不肯官祿后代,何以遺子孫乎?」公曰:「伐人皆遺之以危,今獨遺之以安,雖所遺不同,未為無所遺也。」表嘆息而去。后攜其妻子而登鹿門山,因采藥不返。
又曰:向長字子平,《高士傳》向字作尚。河內朝歌人也。隱居不仕,性尚中和,好通《易》、《老》。貧無資食,好事者更饋焉。受之,取足而返其餘。王莽大司空王邑辟之,連年乃至。欲薦於莽,固辭,乃止。遂求退。讀《易》至於《損》、《益》卦,喟然嘆曰:「吾已知富不如貧,貴不如賤,未知死何如生耳。建武中,男女嫁娶既畢,敕斷家事,勿相關,當如我死也。」於是遂肆意與同好北海禽慶俱游五岳名山,不知所終。
又曰:王霸字孺仲,太原人。少有清節,及王莽篡位,棄冠帶,絕交宦。建武中,征到尚書,拜,稱名不稱臣。有司問其故,霸曰:「天子有所不臣,諸侯有所不友。」司徒侯霸讓位於霸,閻陽毀之,遂止。以病歸,隱居守志,連征不至。
又曰:閔叔仲,代稱節士,雖周黨之潔清,自以弗及也。黨見其含菽飲水,遺之以生蒜,受而不食。建武中,應司徒侯霸之辟,既而投劾而去。復征博士,不至。客居安邑,老病家貧,不能得肉,日買豬肝一斤,屠者或不肯與。安邑令聞,敕市吏常給焉。叔仲怪而問之,知乃嘆曰:「閔叔仲豈以口腹累安邑乎?」遂去。客沛,以壽卒。
又曰:野王二老,不知何許人也。初,世祖貳於更始,會關中擾亂,遣鄧禹西征,送之于道。既反,因於野王獵,路見二老者即禽。世祖問曰:「禽何向?」舉手西指言:「此中多虎,臣每即禽,虎亦即臣,請大王勿往也。」世祖曰:「茍有其備,虎亦何患?」二老曰:「何大王之謬耶?昔湯即桀於鳴條而大城於亳,武王即紂於牧野而大城於郟鄏。彼二王者,備非不深也。是以即人者人亦即之,雖有其備,庸可忽乎?」世祖悟其旨,謂左右曰:「此隱者也。」將用之,辭去,莫知所在。
又曰:嚴光字子陵,會稽餘姚人。少有高名,與世祖同游學。及世祖即位,光乃變姓名,隱身不見。帝思其賢,乃令以物色訪之。后齊國上言,有一男子披羊裘釣澤中。乃備安車玄纁聘之,三反而後至。車駕即幸其館,至光臥所,撫光腹曰:「咄咄,子陵何不出相助為治耶?」光曰:「昔唐虞著德,巢父洗耳。士故有志,何至相逼?」后引光入,共偃臥,光以足加帝腹上。明日,太史奏客星犯御座,帝笑曰:「朕故人嚴子陵耳。」除諫議,不屈,耕富春山。後名其釣處為嚴陵瀨。
