子韋之言:「天處高而聽卑,君有君人之言三,天必三賞君。」夫天、體也,與地無異。諸有體者,耳咸附於首。體與耳殊,未之有也。天之去人,高數萬里,使耳附天,聽數萬里之語,弗能聞也。人坐樓臺之上,察地之螻蟻,尚不見其體,安能聞其聲?何則?螻蟻之體細,不若人形大,聲音孔氣,不能達也。今天之崇高,非直樓臺,人體比於天,非若螻蟻於人也。謂天非若螻蟻於人也。謂天聞人言,隨善惡為吉凶,誤矣。四夷入諸夏,因譯而通。同形均氣,語不相曉,雖五帝三王,不能去譯獨曉四夷,況天與人異體,音與人殊乎?人不曉天所為,天安能知人所行?使天體乎?耳高,不能聞人言;使天氣乎?氣若雲煙,安能聽人辭?

且夫物之生長,無卒成暴起,皆有浸漸。為道學仙之人,能先生數寸之毛羽,從地自奮,升樓臺之陛,乃可謂升天。今無小升之兆,卒有大飛之驗,何方術之學成無浸漸也?毛羽大效,難以觀實。
Daoxu:
Now, the growth and development of creatures is not abrupt, and its changes are not violent, but gradually brought about. If the Daoists and students of immortality could first grow feathers and plumes several inches long, so that they could skim over the earth, and rise to the terraces of high buildings, one might believe that they can ascend to heaven. But they do not show that they are able to fly even a small distance. How can they suddenly acquire the faculty of flying such a long way through the study of their miraculous arts without any gradual progress? That such a great result might be really effected by means of feathers and wings cannot be ascertained.

夫星霣或時至地,或時不能,尺丈之數難審也。《史記》言「尺」,亦以太甚矣。夫地有樓臺山陵,安得言「尺」?孔子言「如雨」,得其實矣。孔子作《春秋》,故正言「如雨」。如孔子不作,「不及地尺」之文,遂傳至今。

《春秋》:「莊公七年夏四月辛卯,夜中,恆星不見,星霣如雨者。」《公羊傳》曰:「如雨者何?非雨也。非雨,則曷為謂之『如雨』?不修《春秋》曰:『雨星,不及地尺而復。』君子修之曰:『星霣如雨。』」不修《春秋》者,未修《春秋》時《魯史記》,曰:「星霣如雨,不及地尺而復。」君子者、孔子。孔子修之曰:「星霣如雨。」孔子之意,以為地有山陵樓臺,云「不及地尺」,恐失其實;更正之曰:「如雨。」「如雨」者、為從地上而下,星亦從天霣而復,與同,故曰「如」。

31 說日:
又僖公十六年正月戊申,霣石于宋五。《左氏傳》曰:「星也。」夫謂霣石為星,則謂霣為石矣。辛卯之夜,星霣為星,則實為石矣。辛卯之夜,星霣如是石,地有樓臺樓臺崩壞。孔子雖不合言「及地尺」,雖地必有實數,魯史目見,不空言者也,云「與雨俱」,雨集於地,石亦宜然。至地而樓臺不壞,非星明矣。

夫孔子之門,講習五經,五經皆習,庶幾之才也。顏淵曰:「博我以文。」才智高者,能為博矣。顏淵之曰「博」者,豈徒一經哉?我不能博五經,又不能博眾事,守信一學,不好廣觀,無溫故知新之明,而有守愚不覽之闇,其謂一經是者,其宜也。開戶內日之光,日光不能照幽;鑿窗啟牖,以助戶明也。夫一經之說,猶日明也;助以《傳書》,猶窗牖也。百家之言,令人曉明,非徒窗牖之開、日光之照也。是故日光照室內,道術明胸中。開戶內光,坐高堂之上,眇升樓臺,窺四鄰之廷,人之所願也。閉戶幽坐,向冥冥之內,穿壙穴臥,造黃泉之際,人之所惡也。夫閉心塞意,不高瞻覽者,死人之徒也哉!

何以知簡子所見帝非實帝也?以夢占知之。樓臺山陵、官位之象也,人夢上樓臺,升山陵,輒得官位。實樓臺山陵非官位也,則知簡子所夢見帝者非天帝也。人臣夢見人君,人君必不見,又必不賜。以人臣夢占之,知帝賜二笥、翟犬者,非天帝也。非天帝,則其言與百鬼游于鈞天,非天也。魯叔孫穆子夢天壓己者,審然,是天下至地也。不至地,則有樓臺之抗,不得及己。及己,則樓臺宜壞。樓臺不壞,是天不至地。不至地,則不得壓己。不得壓己,則壓己者,非天也,則天之象也。叔孫穆子所夢壓己之天非天,則知趙簡子所游之天非天也。

辨祟

夫倮蟲三百六十,人為之長。人、物也,萬物之中有知慧者也。其受命於天,稟氣於元,與物無異。鳥有巢棲,獸有窟穴,蟲魚介鱗,各有區處,猶人之有室宅樓臺也。能行之物,死傷病困,小大相害。或人捕取,以給口腹,非作窠穿穴有所觸,東西行徙有所犯也。人有死生,物亦有終始;人有起居,物亦有動作。血脈、首足、耳目、鼻口與人不別,惟好惡與人不同,故人不能曉其音,不見其指耳!及其游於黨類,接於同品,其知去就,與人無異。共天同地,並仰日月,而鬼神之禍,獨加於人,不加於物,未曉其故也。天地之性、人為貴,豈天禍為貴者作,不為賤者設哉?何其性類同而禍患別也?「刑不上大夫」,聖王於貴者闊也。聖王刑賤不罰貴,鬼神禍貴不殃賤,非《易》所謂「大人與鬼神合其吉凶」也。

吳為邾故,將伐魯,問於叔孫輒,叔孫輒對曰,魯有名而無情,伐之必得志焉,退而告公山不狃,公山不狃曰,非禮也,君子違不適讎國,未臣而有伐之,奔命焉,死之可也,所託也則隱,且夫人之行也,不以所惡廢鄉,今子以小惡而欲覆宗國,不亦難乎,若使子率,子必辭,王將使我子張疾之,王問於子洩,對曰,魯雖無與立,必有與斃,諸侯將救之,未可以得志焉,晉與齊楚輔之,是四讎也,夫魯,齊晉之脣,脣亡齒寒,君所知也,不救何為,三月,吳伐我,子洩率,故道險,從武城,初武城人或有因於吳竟田焉,拘鄫人之漚菅者,曰,何故使吾水滋,及吳師至,拘者道之,以伐武城,克之,王犯嘗為之宰,澹臺子羽之父好焉,國人懼,懿子謂景伯,若之何,對曰,吳師來,斯與之戰,何患焉,且召之而至,又何求焉,吳師克東陽而進,舍於五梧,明日,舍於蠶室,公賓庚,公甲叔子,與戰于夷,獲叔子與析朱鉏,獻於王,王曰,此同車,必使能,國未可望也,明日舍于庚宗,遂次于泗上,微虎欲宵攻王舍,私屬徒七百人,三踊於幕庭,卒三百人,有若與焉,及稷門之內,或謂季孫曰,不足以害吳,而多殺國士,不如已也,乃止之,吳子聞之,一夕三遷,吳人行成,將盟,景伯曰,楚人圍宋,易子而食,析骸而爨,猶無城下之盟,我未及虧,而有城下之盟,是棄國也,吳輕而遠,不能久,將歸矣,請少待之,弗從,景伯負載,造於萊門,乃請釋子服何於吳。吳人許之,以王子姑曹當之,而後止,吳人盟而還。
齊悼公之來也,季康子以其妹妻之,即位而逆之,季魴侯通焉,女言其情,弗敢與也,齊侯怒,夏,五月,齊鮑牧帥師伐我,取讙及闡,或譖胡姬於齊侯,曰,安孺子之黨也,六月,齊侯殺胡姬,齊侯使如吳請師,將以伐我,乃歸邾子,邾子又無道,吳子使大宰子餘討之,囚諸樓臺栫之以棘,使諸大夫奉大子革以為政。
秋,及齊平,九月,臧賓如如齊蒞盟,齊閭丘明來蒞盟,且逆季姬以歸,嬖,鮑牧又謂群公子曰,使女有馬千乘乎,公子愬之,公謂鮑子,或譖子,子姑居於潞以察之,若有之,則分室以行,若無之,則反子之所,出門,使以三分之一行,半道,使以二乘,及潞,麇之以入,遂殺之。
冬,十二月,齊人歸讙及闡,季姬嬖故也。
