殷紂為天子而稱獨夫,仲尼為匹夫而稱素王,盡此類也。故善釣者不易淵而殉魚,君子不降席而追道。治乎八尺之中而德化光矣。古之人謌曰:「相彼玄鳥,止于陵阪;仁道在近,求之無遠。」人情也、莫不惡謗,而卒不免乎謗,其故何也?非愛致力而不已之也,已之之術反也。謗之為名也,逃之而愈至,距之而愈來,訟之而愈多。明乎此,則君子不足為也;闇乎此,則小人不足得也。帝舜屢省,禹拜昌言,明乎此者也。厲王蒙戮,吳起刺之,闇乎此者也。、皆書名前策,著形列圖,或為世法,或為世戒,可不慎之!曾子曰:「或言予之善,予惟恐其聞;或言予之不善,惟恐過而見予之鄙色焉。」故君子服過也,非徒飾其辭而已。誠發乎中心,形乎容貌,其愛之也深,其更之也速。如追兔,惟恐不逮,故有進業、無退功。《》曰:「相彼脊令,載飛載鳴。我日斯邁,而月斯征。」遷善不懈之謂也。夫聞過而不改,謂之喪心;思過而不改,謂之失體。失體、喪心之人,禍亂之所及也。君子舍旃。《周書》有言:「人毋鑒於水,鑒於人也。」鑒也者、可以察形,言也者、可以知德。小人恥其面之不及子都也,君子恥其行之不如堯、舜也。故小人尚明鑒,君子尚至言。至言也、非賢友則無取之,故君子必求賢友也。《》曰:「伐木丁丁,鳥嚶。出自幽谷,遷于喬木。」言朋友之義務,在切直以升於善道者也。故君子不友不如己者,非羞彼而大我也,不如己者須己而植者也。然則扶人不暇,將誰相我哉?吾之僨也亦無日矣!故僨則縱多,友邪則己僻也。是以君子慎取友也。孔子曰:「居而得賢友,福之次也。」夫賢者、言足聽,貌足象,行足法,加乎善獎人之美,而好攝人之過,其不隱也如影,其不諱也如響,故我之憚之,若嚴君在堂,而神明處室矣。雖欲為不善,其敢乎?故求益者之居遊也,必近所畏而遠所易。《》云:「無棄爾輔,員于爾輻。屢顧爾僕,不輸爾載。」親賢求助之謂也。

伐木丁丁、鳥鳴嚶嚶。
出自幽谷、遷于喬木。
嚶其鳴矣、求其友聲。
相彼鳥矣、猶求友聲。
矧伊人矣、不求友生。
神之聽之、終和且平。
Fa Mu:
On the trees go the blows zheng-zheng;
And the birds cry out ying-ying.
One issues from the dark valley,
And removes to the lofty tree,
While ying goes its cry,
Seeking with its voice its companion.
Look at the bird,
Bird as it is, seeking with its voice its companion;
And shall a man,
Not seek to have his friends?
Spiritual beings will then hearken to him;
He shall have harmony and peace.
