The ancient sage-kings, Yu, Tang, Wen, and Wu loved the people of the world universally, leading them to reverence Heaven and worship the spirits. Many were their benefits to the people. And, thereupon Heaven blessed them, establishing them emperors; and all the feudal lords of the empire showed them respect. |

Zi Gong replied, "The doctrines of Wen and Wu have not yet fallen to the ground. They are to be found among men." |

Yin Shi spoke about him to others, saying, 'If he did not know that the king could not be made a Tang or a Wu, that showed his want of intelligence.' |

Tang and Wu contended (for the sovereignty), and each became king; the duke a contended (for Qi), which led to his extinction. |

And thus it was (also) that Yu, Tang, Wen and Wu, king Cheng, and the duke of Zhou obtained their distinction. |
