| The ancient sage-kings, Yu, Tang, Wen, and Wu loved the people of the world universally, leading them to reverence Heaven and worship the spirits. Many were their benefits to the people. And, thereupon Heaven blessed them, establishing them emperors; and all the feudal lords of the empire showed them respect. |
| 《·》: | 子貢曰：「文武之道，未墜於地，在人。」 |
| Zi Gong replied, "The doctrines of Wen and Wu have not yet fallen to the ground. They are to be found among men." |
| 《·》: | 尹士語人曰：「不識王之不可以為湯武，則是不明也。」 |
| Yin Shi spoke about him to others, saying, 'If he did not know that the king could not be made a Tang or a Wu, that showed his want of intelligence.' |
| 《·》: | 湯、武爭而王，白公爭而滅。 |
| Tang and Wu contended (for the sovereignty), and each became king; the duke a contended (for Qi), which led to his extinction. |
| 《·》: | 禹、湯、文、武、成王、周公，由此其選也。 |
| And thus it was (also) that Yu, Tang, Wen and Wu, king Cheng, and the duke of Zhou obtained their distinction. |
| 《·》: | 湯武之王也，不循古而興。 |
| Tang and Wu succeeded in attaining supremacy without following antiquity. |
| 《·》: | 伊尹毋變殷，太公毋變周，則湯、武不王矣。 |
| 《·》: | 是以稱湯、武之賢。 |
| 《·》: | 王道衰微，穆王閔文武之道缺，乃命伯臩申誡太仆國之政，作臩命。 |
| 《·》: | 是若不行，則湯武在上曷益？ |
| 《·》: | 故桀紂以不仁失天下，湯武以積德有海土，是以聖王貴德而務行之。 |
| 《·》: | 進義誅惡絕之本，而以其施，此舉湯武同而有異。 |
| 《·》: | 主也者，使非有者也，舜、禹、湯、武皆然。 |
| 《·》: | 天地革而四時成，湯武革命，順乎天而應乎人，革之時大矣哉！ |
| 《·》: | 湯武愛天下，茲王。 |
| 《·》: | 士民不親附，湯武不能以戰勝。 |
