| The Mao Shi says: "Since my lord went eastward, my hair hangs like flying thistle. Is it for lack of oil and water? Who am I to beautify myself for?" Also: "The horn-shaped pillow shines brightly, the brocade quilt gleams. My beloved has forgotten this place; who will keep vigil with me alone?" Also: "I went east to Dongshan, and did not return. I came from the east, with drizzling rain; storks cry on mounds, while a wife sighs in her room." Also: "Cai Lü" criticizes the sorrow of being abandoned. During the reign of King You, there were many who lamented abandonment. All day she gathered green herbs, yet could not fill a single handful; my hair is curled and disheveled—let me go bathe it soon. All day I picked indigo plants, but still could not fill one sash. We set five days as the deadline, yet six passed without his coming. Also: "A quiet girl so fair, she waits for me at the city corner; hiding with affection, I scratch my head and pace back and forth." Also: "In your joyous new marriage, you are like a brother to me." Also said: "Before meeting the gentleman, my heart was full of worry. Now that I have seen him, now that I have met him face to face, my heart is at ease." Also: "Before meeting the gentleman, I was anxious and distressed. Now that I have seen him face to face, now that we are together, my heart rejoices." | ||

| The Zuo Zhuan: Jin Shuxiang said, "In the past, Master Jia was ugly. He married a beautiful wife who did not speak or smile for three years. When he took her to Gaoshan, he shot and caught a pheasant; only then did his wife begin to smile and speak." Also. Jin Wen Gong said to Ji Kui: "Wait for me twenty-five years, and if I do not return by then, you may marry another." Ji Kui said: "I have already waited twenty-five years." If I were to marry again in this way, it would be like clinging to a dead tree. | ||
| The Shuo Yuan says: King Qi built a nine-story terrace and sought painters from the capital, offering them money. There was Jing Jun, who often suffered hunger and cold; his wife was beautiful. Jing Jun skillfully painted the terrace. Greedy for the reward, he left home to paint the terrace for a long time. Missing his wife, he looked toward her direction while smiling. A passerby saw this and reported it to the king, so King Qi summoned him and asked about it. He replied: "With a wife like her, after being away from home for so long, I often think of her. Secretly, I painted her likeness to comfort my heart in separation; I did not realize the king would hear about it." | ||

| "Han Zhang Chang Drawing His Wife's Eyebrows": The emperor learned of this and asked him about it. Zhang Chang said: "What goes on within the inner chambers is a private matter between husband and wife; there are even more intimate things than this." Also: Lady Li, who had the emperor's favor during Emperor Wu's reign, died. The emperor felt deep sorrow and pity for her. He had her portrait painted in the Ganhuan Palace. Initially, when Lady Li was gravely ill, the emperor personally visited to see her condition. Lady Li replied while covering herself with a quilt: "I have been bedridden for a long time, and my appearance is ruined; I cannot be seen by the emperor." The emperor said: "Lady, your illness is serious; you may not recover. If you could see me once and entrust your wishes to the king and your brothers, would it not bring you peace?" Lady Li said: "Your high position is due to the emperor, not because of a single meeting." The emperor repeated his request and insisted on seeing her. Lady Li then turned away toward the wall, sobbing quietly, which made the emperor unhappy as he left. Lady Li's sisters scolded her and said: "Is it not possible for you to see His Majesty once, just to entrust your brothers with something?" Lady Li said: "Not seeing the emperor is precisely why I wish to place a deeper trust in my brothers." Those who serve others through their beauty will find affection wane when the beauty fades. What the emperor longs for and remembers about me is my youthful appearance. Now, if he sees my ruined appearance and realizes I am no longer as beautiful as before, he will surely fear me or despise me. Would he still be willing to think of taking care of my brothers? | ||
| The Feng Su Tong says: There were two brothers, Zhang Boxie and Zhongxie. They looked exactly alike in appearance. One day, after Zhongxie's wife had just finished her makeup, she suddenly saw Boxie. She then jokingly asked: "Is my makeup nice today?" Boxie replied: "I am Boxie." The wife hurriedly avoided him. A short while later, she saw Boxie again and still thought it was Zhongxie, so she told him: "Earlier I made a big mistake." Boxie said: "I am indeed Boxie." | ||

| The Shi Shuo says: Zhong Fu Ren, the wife of Wang Hun, often addressed him as "qing hun." Wang Hun said: "How can that be?" His wife said: "I love you dearly, so I call you 'qing.' If I do not call you 'qing,' who else will call me 'qing'?" Also said: Cao Shi, the wife of Xun Fengqian, was very beautiful. When she often suffered from fever, Fengqian would go to the courtyard to fetch cool air and bring it back home, using a cloth to apply it on her body for relief. After his wife's death, when others came to mourn, he did not weep but was deeply grieved in spirit. Soon after, Fengqian also died. Also said: After Sun Chu's wife passed away, on the day of her funeral rites, he composed a poem to mourn her. Wang Wuzi read his work and said: "I do not know whether sentiment gives rise to writing, or writing gives rise to sentiment. Seeing this makes one appreciate the value of a loving couple even more." | ||

| [Poem] The "Ancient Poem" says: "Green is the grass by the riverside, lush are the willows in the garden. A graceful maiden on the tower stands bright before her window. Her red-painted face is adorned elegantly; her delicate hands emerge pale and fine. Once a courtesan's daughter, now she has become the wife of a wandering man. The wanderer travels but does not return; how can one guard an empty bed alone?" Also said: "Going up the mountain to gather mianwu, I met my former husband on the way down. Kneeling respectfully, I asked him about his new wife. 'How is your new bride?' My husband replied: 'Though she is beautiful, she cannot compare with you. Her looks may be similar, but her hands are not as graceful. The new wife enters through the main gate; you left from a side door. She is good at weaving brocade, while you were skilled in weaving plain silk. She weaves one bolt of brocade per day, whereas you wove over five zhang of plain silk. When comparing brocade to plain silk, the new bride cannot match your excellence.'" Also said: "The orchid and sandalwood grow in the spring sunshine, thriving even through winter. I long to follow my past love; my sincere feelings touch all four seasons. A beautiful person dwells in the clouds above, separated from me by an endless path across heaven." | ||
| "Mrs. Liu, Wife of Jiao Zhongqing of the Later Han Dynasty": She was sent away by her mother-in-law; people at that time felt sorrow for her. She composed a poem: "The peacock flies southeast, pausing every five li. At thirteen I could weave brocade; at fourteen I learned to sew clothes. At fifteen I played the konghou zither; at sixteen I recited poetry and books. At seventeen I became a wife, yet my heart has always been filled with sorrow. You are an official of the government, but your loyalty remains unchanged. At cockcrow I enter the loom to weave, night after night without rest. In three days I finish five bolts of cloth, yet my mother-in-law still calls me slow. It is not that I am slow at weaving; it's just hard being a daughter-in-law in your family. I have an embroidered waistcoat, with delicate golden thread shimmering. A red silk canopy bed hangs above, its four corners adorned with fragrant sachets. An interwoven ivory mat lies beneath, held by fine white silk ropes. Though humble and lowly, these things are still suitable for a future bride." | ||

| In the poetry of Cao Zhi, Prince Chen of Wei: "I put on my robe and left the inner chamber, strolling leisurely between the pillars. How desolate is this empty room? Green grass covers the steps and courtyard. An empty hole naturally brings wind; a hundred birds fly southward in flocks. How can spring longing be forgotten? My sorrow and grief are shared with you. A beloved person dwells afar, while I remain alone and forsaken. Joyful reunions are hard to come by again, just as orchids do not bloom twice. People all abandon their old loves; would you too forget me as time passes? I cling like a tangle of moss on pine trees, or like duckweed drifting upon water. I serve you faithfully with my life, day and night without wavering. If in the end your gaze still rests on me with kindness, it will fulfill my deepest feelings forever." Also said: "The bright moon shines on the high tower, its light lingering and wandering. Above is a woman full of sorrow; her sighs carry more than grief. Asking who laments thus, they say it's the wife of a traveler. You have been away for over ten years, while I live alone in solitude. You are like dust on a clear road, and I am like muddy silt. We drift apart with different fates; when can we ever reunite? I wish to become the southwest wind, forever drifting into your embrace. But if your heart remains closed, where shall my heart find rest?" Also said: "In the northwest, there is a weaving woman; her brocade and gauze are so colorful. At dawn she takes up the loom, but by dusk no pattern is complete. She sighs through the long night, her sorrowful cries reaching into the blue sky. I guard an empty room alone, while my husband follows the army on campaign. He promised to return in three years; now it has already passed nine springs. A lone bird circles above the tree, crying out for its flock. I wish to be a ray of southern light, speeding forward so that my lord may see me." | ||
| In the Shi Si Shi by Xu Gan of Wei: "The drifting clouds are so vast; I wish they could carry my words. Once gone, one cannot return; I have long lingered and sighed. People part but will reunite again, yet alone do I lack a time to return. Ever since you left..." The bright mirror lies open and unused; my longing for you flows like water, never ceasing. | ||
| In the Neigu Shi by Pan Yue of Jin: "Living in quietness, I think of my beloved; climbing the city wall to gaze at the four marshes. The spring grass is lush and green; mulberry pickers are busy. Fragrant woods display their red blossoms; clear waters rush over stones. At first, travel begins with ice still unthawed, yet suddenly it's time for thin summer clothes. Three thousand li stretch endlessly; a distant traveler journeys far away. My heart gallops after your rosy face; each moment passes like more than an inch. Nightly sorrow reaches dawn; morning grief lingers until dusk. Mountains and rivers remain eternal, but my wish to reunite is unfulfilled. I climb the mountain of parting to plead for a return date, yet clouds hang low—no answer comes." | ||

| In the poem written by Lu Ji of Jin for the wife of Lu Siyuan: "Two unions foretell a happy match; as a daughter, she follows proper rites. She purifies herself and enters her husband's noble home, forever distant from mother and brothers. How could he indulge in worldly favor, forgetting to return home? Though married now for three years, I feel ashamed of my empty reputation. As the year ends, sorrowful winds abound; the inner chamber is cool and quiet. Pressing the pillow against my frail body, who else but you would see me honored? Separated from you, my heart aches day and night. How could I forget the humble peach and plum trees, yet I long for jade and qiong." Another poem modeled after "The Green Grass by the Riverside" says: "Soft and graceful is the Jiangli grass, shimmering along the river's side. There stands a fair maiden, elegant as she weaves before her hall. Her radiant beauty glows; her lovely face shines bright. My husband travels but does not return, leaving me with only one wing to rest on. A sorrowful wind enters my empty room, and in the middle of the night I sigh deeply." Another poem, modeled after "The Orchid and Sandalwood Grow in the Spring Sun," says: "A noble tree grows toward the morning sun; I imagine its branches growing dense. With a steadfast heart, I keep my promise through time; even when winter comes, it never withers. How distant is that fair one? Clearly visible among the clouds." | ||

| In the Qingshi by Zhang Hua of Jin: "There is a fair lady in the north, sitting upright as she plays her zither. From dawn to dusk she plucks strings and flutes, yet no melody completes itself. My sorrow knots deep within; my thoughts dwell on one I admire." Another "Qingshi" says: "You dwell in the southern part of Beihai, while I remain in the northern reaches of Jiangnan. Our faces hang apart across a long road; mountains and rivers block us deeply. We once shared joy and deep affection, binding our hearts to one another. Carrying this kindness, we uphold loyalty and sincerity, entrusting my small heart from ten thousand li away." Another poem says: "Looking out over the four fields, I wander and linger alone. Orchids grow along clear streams; their blossoms shade green islets. The fair one is not here—what beauty can I offer to whom? Birds in nests know the cold wind; creatures in holes feel the rain. Never having been far apart, how could we understand longing for each other?" | ||
| In the Neishi Shi by Emperor Xiaowu of Song: "Since you left..." The golden and green ornaments grow dull, my longing for you like the sun and moon—returning day and night. In a poem modeled by Liu Yigong of Jiangxia in Song: "Since you left..." The silk chest remains closed and unused; I think of you like a gentle breeze, wandering day and night. | ||
| In the modeled poem by Yan Shibai of Song: "Since you left..." The fragrant curtain hangs low and unmoved; I think of you as swirling snow, drifting in disorder without beginning or end. | ||
| In the Qiutu Shi by Wang Rong of Qi: "The sun and moon shine together; pine and bamboo both remain loyal. I wear my ornaments, content to be far away, holding a mirror waiting for your clarity. Let us first share the bond of friendship, then enjoy harmonious love like zither and lute. Suddenly, the fair one is a thousand li distant; in this empty room, thoughts accumulate." | ||

| In the Yong Ren Qi Qie Shi by Emperor Jianwen of Liang: "Once, with graceful steps like jade, she blushed beside candlelight. Who could have thought her love would break? She wept in silence, pitying herself alone. I only feel joy turn to sorrow; it is not because beauty fades easily. A lone goose abandons the path halfway; a solitary phoenix dies before the mirror." Another "Chun Xiao Shi" says: "Flowers cluster with spring, the embroidered curtain hangs empty through the long night. The wind's sound blends with bamboo notes; moonlight mirrors the pond below. Colorful letters are folded in vain—no message reaches beyond the clouds." Another "Xiaosi Shi" says: "Morning birds chirp and trill, morning flowers burst open in disorder. Incense curls into the canopy bed; a screen hides the mirror stand. How many tears have stained my red makeup? When will the wanderer return?" Another "Dong Xiao Shi" says: "On a winter morning, sunlight shines on the beam; I descend from my bed with sorrow. The curtain is drawn like bamboo leaves; the mirror reflects the pattern of lotus blossoms. Since no one will notice, why bother to apply red makeup early?" Another "Qiu Gui Ye Si Shi" says: "It is not because of parting at Changxin, nor my husband's journey. Suddenly he vanishes from the nine gates; ten thousand sorrows fill my heart. The western gate closes with a fish-shaped key; on this night bed, I grieve before the painted screen. A returning moon shines upon the steps; insects chant around the walls. Early frost clings to thin leaves; autumn winds scatter fireflies. My old makeup remains untouched for days; new clothes remain torn and unfinished. If you wish to know that I cannot sleep, listen—outside the city, the sound of pounding cloth echoes." Another "Changlou Yuanjie Shi" says: "Morning sun slants into the room, spring birds fly out of the woods. Each ray and shadow is beautiful; each trill pierces my heart. In Shanglin Park, flowers fall in profusion; on Qi River, moss floats silently. Time flies, seasons pass quickly—why endure this shame with restraint?" Another "Chunbie Shi" says: "The grapevine in the pavilion hangs heavy with fruit; in Jiangnan, the cardamom sprouts on twin branches. Even without feeling or intent it is like this—how much more so for those who love and resent, yet must part." Another poem says: "Pity the tides of Huai River, ebbing and flowing. Spring embankments are draped with willows over river bridges. My tears have not yet dried when morning comes; already I hear jade pendants—she is calling for me." Another poem says: "Peach red and plum white, like morning makeup; I am too ashamed to hold my withered face beside fresh fragrance. I would not mind dying before you for a moment, but sorrow lingers without the sweet scent of western lands." | ||

| In the Han Gui Shi by Emperor Yuandi of Liang: "Crows and magpies fly south at night; my husband is away, not yet returned. The pool reflects a bright moon; cold winds carry the sound of pounding clothes. I wish to weave a cross-stitch brocade, entrusting it through you to Wuwei." Another "Guiyuan Shi" says: "The wanderer follows official duties, while I guard the room alone. The dusty mirror is closed each morning; the cold bed lies empty every night. If there were no joy or pleasure, why would he travel so far east and west? Does he know that I wait for him? My tears are spent, yet in dreams I weep." Another "Dai Jiuji Youyuan Shi" says: "Better to be separated by ten thousand li than suddenly face a parting of life and death. How painful it is when he appears before me, yet his love shifts from old to new. Before the spring blossoms can bloom, they are quickly swept away by cold winds. My frowning brows relax then tighten; my weeping red tears dry only to fall again. Who could skillfully compose a poem for this? I would not trade it even for gold." Another "Bie Shi" says: "The moonlight on Kunming Lake is like a ribbon at night; the flowers in Shanglin shine like snowflakes by morning. Spring stirs my heart beneath these blossoms and moons—how can anyone bear this longing now that you are not here?" Another poem says: "Look at the dragon brocade on the loom; gaze upon the joyous branches in the courtyard. Sunlight filters through gauzy curtains, and petals drift past leaves over golden pools. No news of partings turning into reunions—only sorrow as unions end in separation." Another poem says: "Willows by the gate hang in tangled threads; even a fair lady cannot control her feelings. Just now I spoke of new poems on silk, who would have known they'd become plain weavings of sorrow." Another poem says: "At dusk I linger by Weiqiao to the west, just seeing the drifting moon level with clouds. If only moonlight had no near or far reach, it would shine upon my parting tears tonight." Another poem says: "After parting, we no longer climb the same blossoms; after separation, letters have nothing to do with me. I wish to find a traveler to carry my message—my clothes are always damp from seawater, and he should return at dusk." Another poem says: "In March, peach blossoms blend with my face's rouge; in May, fresh oil is best for smoothing the skin. Do not wait until last minute to send no one—do not say there are no merchants on the river." | ||

| In the Shangshan Cai Miuwu Shi by Wang Sengru of Liang, written for He Xun's former concubine: "Stepping out to gaze at orchid fragrance, I lift my curtain and meet you. I restrain my face with a single visit; how could this new bride know? The new bride smiles as she approaches; the old one hides her smile. My feelings are in cold pines; your heart follows morning hibiscus." Another "Weiji Ren Yuan Shi" says: "Knowing the sorrow in my heart, I still blush before my shadow. What was once earnest has now turned to indifference. Return your fan to me; give back my robe to you. A broken string can be mended, but a lost heart is hardest to keep." Another "Weiren Shang Jin Er Bu Jian Shi" says: "Ying Nü on the Fenghuang Tower, Han Ji in the Bailing Hall. How could they surpass immortals and die, their voices and faces now unseen? Only I have a true love, from the same hometown, not even different counties apart. Different counties do not separate us; being of the same hometown makes our silence even deeper. Silent like Niangniu and Zhinu, how can we send just one word?" Another "Zuo Chongji Shi" says: "When you return to the high hall, I have just finished my beauty. In a secluded room, I lift the brocade curtain; on the winding corridor, I walk in pearl-slippered steps. A jade hairpin can be worn at will; a silk robe is easy to remove. A second glance brings a city's worth of wealth; one look alone is worth a thousand gold." Another "Yong Jiren Shi" says: "Graceful and reserved, she guards her beauty; singing only songs full of feeling. Her glances are not without meaning; her slanted brows bring fortune to those who gaze. No less than Xu Feiqiong in charm, more beautiful than Liu Biyu. Why then did you send her away? Half a cup of wine was drunk." | ||

| In the Chunbie Shi by Xiao Zixian of Liang: "Parrots and swallows fly in pairs, willows stretch a thousand strands in one hue. Just watch those on the road holding hands as they return—who could remain here alone, remembering them from afar?" Another poem says: "In the secluded palace, grass gathers fragrance on its own; yellow birds and fragrant trees depend on each other for affection. They compete in wind and sun, their songs often heard; thick flowers and layered leaves block flight entirely. You should know that at this moment my thoughts stir—briefly pausing to wipe sleeves against a minister's robe." Another poem says: "Clutching sorrow and tears, I part from one who knows my heart. Peach blossoms and plum flowers are left to the wind's mercy. We humans differ from trees—why then does human separation resemble flower falling?" In the Guiyuan Shi by Liu Huan of Liang: "After parting, spring pools change; lotuses wither as ice begins to form. The shears in my chest grow cold; face powder on the stand hardens. My slender waist turns weak; I resent these winter clothes, unable to bear them." Another "Qiu Gui Shi" says: "Autumn winds rise on the tower, despair fills this autumn chamber. Candle wax drips and flowers fall; incense burns in the casket until it is nearly empty. In vain do two lines of tears flow—both float red upon my makeup." | ||

| In the Guiyuan Shi by Wu Jun of Liang: "The Hu Jia flute often sounds sorrowful; drifting tumbleweeds refuse to return. I sit alone in Jiang, while you guard Xiaochangan. We are three thousand li apart—letters and messages arrive unevenly with difficulty. No one sees me through the four seasons—who will again value my silk and gauze?" Another "Guiyuan Shi" says: "Spring grass can be gathered and tied, but my heart is already broken. My green hair changes in sorrow; my red face fades from weeping. It's not only that tears fall like pearls—but also that these pearls turn to blood. I wish to become a magpie mirror, fluttering above partings." Another "Guyi Shi" says: "My humble wife's longing is unbearable; I pick mulberry leaves south of Weicheng. My waist grows thinner, embroidered with twin branches; my hair tangles like a phoenix hairpin. Flowers dance among long grasses; geese fly over green pools. | In the Chunxiao Shi by Liu Xiaochao of Liang: "Spring nights still feel long; spring longing brings more than one wound. Another "Dong Xiao Shi" says: "Winter mornings bring cold winds; I especially think of my traveler's thin clothes. Before applying makeup, I pause with lead and cinnabar—teary-eyed, cutting silk and gauze. Send words to Longcheng below—who knows how hard it is to send letters?" Another "Guyi Shi" says: "Yan and Zhao abound in beauties, sunlight shines on red makeup. The wandering husband has been gone ten years; his silk robe's twin sashes grow long. I resent this spring tower hard to guard, grieve alone on the jade steps. Facing returning swallows, they bring mud around crooked rooms, unevenly entering brocade curtains, flying up and down beside carved beams. If even the old home remains thus—how could an old friend be forgotten? In vain lie pillows and mats—who will share clothes with me? Only in empty nights of orchid oil do I sit alone, facing frost's brightness." | ||

| In the Guiyuan Shi by Liu Xiaoyi of Liang: "I never had golden hall favor, only longed for jade steps' sorrow. Once separated from the northwest beauty, how can I meet again in Chengnan? Morning roosters descend from perches; dew wets my clothes at dawn. My quilt and cover are in vain—promises have indeed been broken. How can I bear to open morning mirrors? With shame and resentment, I close empty doors." Another "Chun You Shi" says: "Clustered orchids have already drawn butterflies; willows half hide crows. As a person, I hate removing my jade pendants; from the start, I have been lazy to listen for news. Only when night magpies fly south do they resemble my heart." Another "Qiu Guiyuan Shi" says: "Though used to sleeping alone, autumn brings only my own sorrow. The fire warmer always warms my feet; the hanging screen rests at my bed's head. | In the Shanjia Guiyuanshi by Zhang Zhengjian of Chen: "The young lord loves spring outings, his cloud-like hair cannot bear sorrow. Parting wild geese briefly cease their song; roads of separation have already passed autumn. Mountain osmanthus blooms late—do not wait for vulgar people." Another "Fu De Jiaqi Jing Bu Gui Shi" says: "My husband travels ten thousand li toward the Yellow River's source; my courtesan wife thinks of willow gardens through three autumns. The road is far—letters sent in vain, weaving brocade in vain. Long nights bring dreams that startle with fear. Silkworm moths repeatedly circle candles before curtains; decaying grass invades jade steps again. Wiping tears and brushing mirrors, I cannot finish makeup. Hurried fingers pluck strings, creating discordant melodies. Year after year passes, yet he still does not return—especially resenting hasty letters as I sew clothes at night. Flowing fireflies reflect moonlight on empty tents; sparse leaves follow wind into broken looms. Alone before a solitary phoenix mirror, its shadow fades completely—still no single goose brings word from afar." | ||

| In the Fu De Kong Gui Yuan Shi by Jiang Zong of Sui: "The wandering wife resents being alone; Lu Ji grieves living in solitude. Strings fall from her zither's tuning, silk remains on her loom. Her tears shamefully never dry—she now realizes dreams are false. Again she laments Changxin Pavilion, where once visits were frequent but now silence reigns." Another "Wei Jiren Yuan Fu San Shi" says: "Cold seas and skies know each other well; an empty bed and bright moon are ill-matched. Fragrant osmanthus in the courtyard withers, sparse paulownia on the well droops its branches. Cold lamps bloom—shame at night's brevity; frost-covered geese, full of feeling, always travel together. Not for longing across Long Shui toward Qin Chuan—my heart breaks thinking of you alone. My short-lived husband loves immortals, flies upward in sorrow to purple mist. Golden elixirs take a hundred refiners to complete, jade wine newly brewed has aged thousands of years. My home in Handan is known for lightness and fickleness; I especially resent the immortal boy's single pill. Grieving, green moss grows where I walk—how could I know so many tears would fade my red powder? Do not lightly mock a young wife with spring winds; silk socks may yet step into He Gong. Cloud chariots await me to ride together—may we share feathered robes and not part. Not like Xiao Shi returning to his tower, but following Chang'e in moonlight play." Another "Guiyuan Shi" says: "Silent green towers lie by the great road; snowflakes fall in profusion before brocade windows. Mandarins on the pond do not fly alone, but Suhe incense in my tent burns empty. Screens intend to block bright moonlight, lamp flames without feeling shine upon lonely sleepers. Liaoxi waters freeze—spring must be scarce; wild geese from Jibei travel thousands of miles. May you cross mountains and rivers soon, remembering me for a moment's peach and plum beauty." Another poem says: "Spiders weave silk to fill the tent; fragrant grass binds leaves across paths. A red face, silently weeping through a lifetime—yellow birds fly and pass at times. Old friends though old were once new; new people though new will again become old." | ||
| 【 Fu 】 In the Qiusi Fu by Yuan Di of Liang: "Ten years since my wandering husband left, I live alone in sorrow. Climbing the tower to gaze afar, I see only distant trees shrouded in mist. The plain stretches endlessly—how many thousand li is this road? Sky and water press together; mountains and clouds share color. Mountains darkly reach into Han River; waters flow faintly, unfathomable. Who can bear watching a lone bird fly, crying with one wing? Autumn—what month is not clear? What autumn moon is not bright? Especially for me, the courtesan's wife, facing this sorrow. At that time, dew wilts courtyard orchids, frost seals steps and terraces. I sit watching my sash grow long; turning to see my waist shrink. Added are autumn waters' rippling waves, autumn clouds like brocade. The sun darkens as dusk approaches; wind rustles across the river. My grievances echo in embroidered cloth; your thoughts sing songs of frontier crossings. Looking and longing for each other—how distant is this road? My hair tangles like flying thistle; my heart grows sadder with every sigh. Sorrow tightens green brows, tears wash away red powder. Alas!" Autumn winds rise, autumn leaves fly; spring flowers fall, spring sun shines. Though spring lingers and still arrives, the traveler walks on and never returns. | ||
| In the Changfu Zibi Fu by Jiang Yan of Liang: "From Zhao's east, she dances in Han palace. Jade seats and golden displays; osmanthus branches charm spring. White walls and emerald towers—bright moon brings autumn. Songs suddenly disperse, courtesans again grieve. The king changes clothes, dew has not yet dried. Serving beside jade carriages as clouds drift, flanking red palanquins with flying 霞. Wishing Southern Mountains have no gaps, pointing toward Shouling to return together. Suddenly green robes rise in anger, white flowers lie offered. No pity for brittle bones—what gold is withheld? Nine layers of ●, high gates grow wild. Green moss accumulates on silver halls; cobwebs form on jade stairs. Passing nine winters in emptiness, spending ten autumns apart. Grieve as spirit and soul fade; fear cypress trees will leave nothing. Leaving 柏梁 with sleeves drawn tight, exiting osmanthus pillars with furrowed brows. Watching vermilion palaces again darken at dusk, touching 嫔华 with one doubt." | ||
| In the Dangzi Fu by Yu Xin of Zhou: "The wandering husband toils on military campaigns, guarding the Great Wall for a thousand li. Long Shui's river remains frozen; mountain passes only know bright moonlight. Especially now, an empty bed brings resentment, parting from my courtesan wife. Silk windows close alone, gauze curtains hang long. New zithers remain untouched, flutes are shyly not played. Year after year in osmanthus gardens, once in orchid chambers. Luo Fu with braided hair, Nongyu at first 笄. New songs sung at midnight, old dances by Qianxi Stream. After parting, feelings no longer exist; before leaving, mirrors need not shine. No message of joy to send, embroidered patterns remain unfinished. Dust drifts over the bed—no need to sweep; fine grass grows across steps freely. Yesterday a Han envoy stood on Zhangtai, saying my husband should return soon. My handkerchief still dries slowly, sorrowed brows open again. Thinking ahead that travelers will arrive, I await them with smiles." | ||
| 【 Shu 】 In the Letter from Qin Jia of Later Han to His Wife: "I cannot cultivate my aspirations, must serve as a county official. Following custom and time, I bow and depart. Knowing you suffer thus, no relief yet comes. Thinking of you brings sorrow—my heart labors endlessly. Traveling distant roads, running through dust and wind—not what I desire, bringing little joy. Calculating the round trip will take many seasons. Thinking of parting causes shared grief; my intentions linger with hesitation. Want to meet briefly, entrust something important. Now sending a carriage—I hope you can manage well." | ||
| In the Letter from Xu Shu, Wife of Qin Jia: "I know you have bent jade and zhang to serve as envoy for annual missions. Recording your name in 王府, witnessing the nation's glory—though losing lofty, pure pursuits, it is also Confucius' humble task of holding a whip." Since first receiving your inquiry, my heart wished to return east. Pressed by illness, I can only sigh in sorrow. Days and months have passed; travel with companions is now set. I imagine preparations are complete, departure near at hand. Who would say Song is far? I long for you eagerly. The room is close but the person distant—how weary am I! Deep valleys wind on, yet you must cross them; high mountains tower, yet you must pass over. How difficult this is indeed. The long road stretches endlessly, yet you must tread it. Ice and frost are cruel, yet your feet must walk through them. Our bodies are not like shadows—how can we move together at every step? We are no Si Mu fish—how can we remain united without separation? Thus I recite the metaphor of 萱草 to ease our mutual affection, cut away present sorrow for future joy. Now you travel to a land of happiness, leisurely in the capital city, observing its grandeur and marvels. Will your eyes not linger on wonders, making it hard to leave? | ||
| In the Letter from Qin Jia to His Wife: "The carriage returned empty, greatly disappointing my hopes. Added sorrow at distant parting—my resentment is deep. I feel regretful indeed. Recently acquired this mirror—it is both clear and beautiful. Its form and patterns are rare in the world. I cherish it deeply, so I give it to you along with a pair of precious hairpins, four kinds of fine incense, one plain zither—which I often play myself." A clear mirror can reflect your form; a precious hairpin can adorn your head. Sweet fragrance can perfume your body; a plain zither can please your ears. | ||
| My wife again replies to Qin Jia: "Having received your kind letter, and also the many gifts—your generous care exceeds my expectations. The mirror's patterns are beautiful; the hairpin is uniquely striking. The fragrance is precious, the plain zither even more delightful. Giving rare items to one as humble as I, cutting from your own treasures to bestow upon me—who else but a man of great kindness would do so? Holding the mirror and pin in hand, my thoughts drift faintly; playing the zither and reciting poetry, my longing tightens into knots. Ordering fragrance to perfume myself, using the clear mirror to reflect my form—these words are excessive." You have not touched my heart yet. Ancient poets felt the sorrow of drifting tumbleweed; Ban Jieyu sighed at who would honor her. This plain zither must wait for your return, this mirror must await you to reflect again. Until I see your radiant form, these treasures shall not be displayed. Until I serve beside your tent, the fragrance will remain unopened. | ||
| In the Letter by He Xun on Behalf of Hengshan Hou to His Wife: "Ancient people once roamed Luorui, met at Yangtai—fleeting immortals resemble our present parting. Smiles before my tent still linger in thought; lingering fragrance from within curtains fades with wind. Covering screens as if ill, stretching necks in vain labor. Mirrors reflect broken phoenixes; zithers mourn separated cranes. My heart burns like oil fire, alone and self-tormented through the night. Thoughts flow like water, ceaseless all day long. Now I know that lush 萱草 cannot truly forget sorrow, light fans cannot really bring joy. The road is near but you are far—news and dust have ceased entirely. One day feels like three autumns; no metaphor suffices. Briefly writing these words, can they express my earnest feelings? Delayed jade and jadefruit letters will comfort my loom." | ||
| In the Letter by Yu Xin on Behalf of Shanghuang Hou's Heir to His Wife: "Ancient immortals led each other, yet still marked three autumns; divine women combed their hair, yet waited nine days. No one has seen a dragon fly from sword cases or cranes part from zither platforms without sorrow in heart and tears at the sound of apes. If not like Xinsi, where can I find home? Parting differs from Handan—how could you know the way? Thinking you gaze into mirrors without weeping, hold flowers outside railings and smile joyfully. Sharing cups within tents, fanning before beds—this is no longer thought of; when will memory return? Learn like sea gods to come and go with tides and winds, not like Weaving Maid waiting for Milky Way to fill before meeting." | ||
| In the Letter by Fu Zhiyao on Behalf of Wang Kuan to His Wife Yianzhu: "Once at Fish Ridge we met in carriages, at Cinnabar Fields we stopped our chariots. Though we saw beauty and temptation, it all passed like a fleeting dream. Thus my home became better than Yangtai—joy not from dreams but reality. I am ashamed to be compared with Xiao Shi, yet paired as immortals. Light fans first opened, happy smiles watched; long eyebrows freshly drawn, sorrowed at parting makeup. Still hear the sound of moving pendants, looking down the corridor without end; still see carriages parting in rows, hoping roads turn back. Broad golden screens—do not let sorrow gather. Always open brocade curtains, quickly await my return. Mirror stands newly emptied, should still have fallen powder. Incense burners not yet moved, surely lingering smoke remains. Tears drip onto fragrant quilts; embroidered flowers remain damp. Sorrow follows jade zithers; cranes startle constantly. Already feel red fish of brocade waters grow distant with rare letters; green birds on Jade Mountains cannot deliver messages from immortal messengers. Colorful brushes try to write, scented paper fills quickly. Clouds may carry words—dreaming still labors in vain. Nine layers for a thousand days—who would think of a courtesan's house? A single pillow through one night feels like parting forever. Let reflected images come together; one phoenix shames the mirror. Do not let her sit alone peering from windows, where Chang'e laughs at people." |
