孟子曰:「以力假仁者霸,霸必有大國,以德行仁者王,王不待大。湯以七十里,文王以百里。以力服人者,非心服也,力不贍也;以德服人者,中心悅而誠服也,如七十子之服孔子也。《》云:『自西自東,自南自北,無思不服。』此之謂也。」
Gong Sun Chou I:
Mencius said, 'He who, using force, makes a pretence to benevolence is the leader of the princes. A leader of the princes requires a large kingdom. He who, using virtue, practises benevolence is the sovereign of the kingdom. To become the sovereign of the kingdom, a prince need not wait for a large kingdom. Tang did it with only seventy li, and king Wen with only a hundred. When one by force subdues men, they do not submit to him in heart. They submit, because their strength is not adequate to resist. When one subdues men by virtue, in their hearts' core they are pleased, and sincerely submit, as was the case with the seventy disciples in their submission to Confucius. What is said in the Book of Poetry, "From the west, from the east, From the south, from the north, There was not one who thought of refusing submission," is an illustration of this.'

客有說春申君者曰:「湯以七十里,文王百里,皆兼天下,一海內。今夫孫子者,天下之賢人也,君藉之百里之勢,臣竊以為不便於君。若何?」春申君曰:「善。」於是使人謝孫子,去而之趙,趙以為上卿。客又說春申君曰:「昔伊尹去夏之殷,殷王而夏亡;管仲去魯而入齊,魯弱而齊強。由是觀之,夫賢者之所在,其君未嘗不善,其國未嘗不安也。今孫子、天下之賢人,何謂辭而去?」春申君又云:「善。」於是使請孫子。孫子因偽喜謝之:「鄙語曰:『癘憐王。』此不恭之語也,雖不可不審也,非比為劫殺死亡之主者也,夫人主年少而放,無術法以知奸,即大臣以專斷圖私,以禁誅於己也,故捨賢長而立幼弱,廢正直而用不善。故春秋之志曰:楚王之子圍聘於鄭,未出境,聞王疾,返問疾,遂以冠纓絞王而殺之,因自立。齊崔杼之妻美,莊公通之,〔崔杼帥其黨而攻莊公,莊公請與分國,〕崔杼不許,欲自刃於廟,〔崔杼又不許,〕莊公走出,踰於外牆,射中其股,遂殺而立其弟景公。近世所見,李兌用趙,餓主父於沙丘,百日而殺之。淖齒用齊,擢閔王之筋,而懸之於廟,宿昔而殺之。夫癘雖癰腫痂疵,上比遠世,未至絞頸射股也,下比近世,未至擢筋餓死也。夫劫殺死亡之主,心之憂勞,形之苦痛,必甚於癘矣。由此觀之,癘雖憐王,可也。」因為賦曰:「旋玉瑤珠不知佩,雜布與錦不知異,閭娵子都莫之媒,嫫母力父是之喜。以盲為明,以聾為聰,以是為非,以吉為凶。嗚呼!上天!曷維其同!」《》曰:「上帝甚蹈,無自瘵焉。

孫況,齊威、宣王之時,聚天下賢士於稷下,尊寵。若鄒衍、田駢、淳于髡之屬甚眾,號曰列大夫,皆世所稱,咸作書刺世。是時,孫卿有秀才,年十五始來遊學。諸子之事皆以為非先王之法也。孫卿善為《詩》、《禮》、《易》、《春秋》。至襄王時,而孫卿最為老師。齊尚循列大夫之缺,而孫卿三為祭酒焉。齊人或讒孫卿,乃適楚,楚相春申君以為蘭陵令。人或謂春申君:「湯以七十里,文王以百里。孫卿、賢者也,今與之百里地,楚其危乎?」春申君謝之,孫卿去之,游趙,應聘於秦。

昔蕃屏之盛德者,則劉德字君道。造次儒服,卓爾不群。好古文,每就人間求善書,必為好寫與之,留其真本,加以金帛。士有不遠千里而至者,多獻其先祖舊書:《周官》、《尚書》、《禮》、《禮記》、《孟子》、《老子》,獻王好之,采《周官》及諸子之樂事,作《樂記》,獻八佾之舞,使弟子王定傳之二十四。首表立《毛氏詩》、《左氏春秋》博士。武帝在位來朝,對辟雍明堂靈靈。故世謂之三雍對也。及詔策所問三十餘事,及著樂語五均事云。天子取諸侯之士,已立五均,則市無二價,四時常均。強者不得困弱,富者不得要貧,則五家有餘,恩及於小民矣。王既有雅材,因獻所集雅樂。天子下大樂官常存肄之,歲時以備數。常山王禹世受河間樂,能說其義。弟子宋曄上書云:「河間王躬求幽隱,興禮樂,蓋有漢之所以興也。王常謂人曰:『禹鑿江,通乎九谷,灑分五湖而注東海,民不怨者,利也。吾將行之。』時元俗自言餌巴豆雲母,賣於都市,七丸一錢,治百病。王病服之,下蛇十餘頭。俗言王病乃六世餘殃,非王所招也。王嘗放乳鹿,仁心感天,故當遇耳。」俗形無影,獻王欲以女配之,俗遁去。故武帝遣所忠問王,王輒對無影。帝曰:「湯以七十里,文王以百里,其勉之。」王知意,即縱酒聽樂,又為《周制》二十篇。
