贊曰:幽贊神明,通合天人之道者,莫著乎易、春秋。然子贛猶云「夫子之文章可得而聞,夫子之言性與天道不可得而聞」已矣。漢興推陰陽言災異者,孝武時有董仲舒、夏侯始昌,昭、宣則眭孟、夏侯勝,元、成則京房、翼奉、劉向、谷永,哀、平則李尋、田終術。此其納說時君著明者也。察其所言,仿佛一端。假經設誼,依託象類,或不免乎「億則屢中」。仲舒下吏,夏侯囚執,眭孟誅戮,李尋流放,此學者之大戒也。京房區區,不量淺深,危言刺譏,構怨彊臣,罪辜不旋踵,亦不密以失身,悲夫!

夫作者曰聖,述者曰明。陶鑄性情,功在上哲。夫子文章,可得而聞,則聖人之情,見乎文辭矣。先王聖化,布在方冊,夫子風采,溢于格言。是以遠稱唐世,則煥乎為盛;近褒周代,則郁哉可從:此政化貴文之徵也。鄭伯入陳,以文辭為功;宋置折俎,以多文舉禮:此事跡貴文之徵也。褒美子產,則云「言以足志,文以足言」;泛論君子,則云「情欲信,辭欲巧」:此修身貴文之徵也。然則志足而言文,情信而辭巧,乃含章之玉牒,秉文之金科矣。

【論】《晉張韓不用舌論》曰:論者以為心氣相驅,因舌而言,卷舌翕氣,安得暢理,余以留意於言,不如留意於不言,徒知無舌之通心,未盡有舌之必通心也。仲尼云,天何言哉。四時行焉。夫子之文章,可得而聞也。夫子之言性與天道,不可得而聞,是謂至精,愈不可聞,樞機之發,主乎榮辱,禍言相尋,召福甚希,喪元滅族,沒有餘哀,三緘告慎,銘在金人,留侯不得已而掉三寸,亦反初服而效神仙,靈龜啟兆於有識,前卻可通於千年,鸚鵡猩猩,鼓弄於籠羅,財無一介之存,普天地之與人物,亦何屑於有言哉。
