1 天瑞:
子列子曰:天地无全功,圣人无全能,万物无全用,全犹备也。故天职生覆,地职形载,圣职教化,物职所宜,职,主也。生各有性,性各有宜。然则天有所短,地有所长,圣有所否,物有所通,夫职适于一方者,馀涂则罔本注罔作阂矣。形必有所分,声必有所属,若温也则不能凉,若宫也则不能商。何则,生覆者不能形载,形载者不能教化,教化者不能违所宜,宜定者不出所位,皆有素分,不可逆也。故天地之道,非阴则阳,圣人之教,非仁则义,万物之宜,非刚则柔,此皆随所宜而不能出所位者也。方圆靖躁,理不得兼。
Zi Liezi said: Heaven and earth have no complete achievements; sages have no all-encompassing abilities; all things have no perfect uses. "Quan" still means "complete." Therefore, the function of Heaven is to give life and cover; the function of Earth is to shape and bear; the function of sages is to educate and transform; the function of things is what suits them. "Zhi" means "to be in charge of." Life has its own nature, and each nature has its suitable role. Thus, Heaven has its shortcomings, Earth has its strengths, sages have their failures, and things have their connections. "A function that is suitable for one aspect will be ineffective in other paths." Original note: "Wang" should be "Gei". Forms must necessarily have divisions, and sounds must necessarily belong to certain categories; if something is warm, it cannot be cool; if a tone is Gong, it cannot be Shang. Why is this so? Those who give life and cover cannot shape and bear; those who shape and bear cannot educate and transform; those who educate and transform cannot go against what suits things; when suitability is fixed, they will not move beyond their positions. "All have inherent divisions and cannot be reversed." Therefore, the principle of Heaven and Earth is not Yin then Yang; the teaching of sages is not benevolence then righteousness; the suitability of all things is not rigidity then flexibility. These are all cases where they follow what suits them but cannot go beyond their positions. Square and round, stillness and restlessness—principles cannot be combined.
