| The Master said, "When the person in authority is beneficent without great expenditure; when he lays tasks on the people without their repining; when he pursues what he desires without being covetous; when he maintains a dignified ease without being proud; when he is majestic without being fierce." |
| 《·》: | 求服其志，不貪其得，故以戰則克，以祭則受福。 |
| It was thus sought to bring their wills into subjection, and make them not pursue the animals (in an irregular way). In this way such men conquered in fight, and such sacrificing obtained blessing. |

| The other said: Why do you approve of those who covet status and long for salary? |

| When Zhuangzi went to Chu, he saw an empty skull, bleached indeed, but still retaining its shape. Tapping it with his horse-switch, he asked it, saying, 'Did you, Sir, in your greed of life, fail in the lessons of reason, and come to this?' |

| But if the legal title is definite even a poor thief would not take it. |
| 《·》: | 縉云氏有不才子，貪于飲食，冒于貨賄，天下謂之饕餮。 |
| Jinyun had a son devoid of ability, who was greedy in eating and drinking, and pursued wealth blindly. All the people called him Taotie (Glutton). |
