| Yue Ling: | In this month they collect the large, heavy bulls, and fiery stallions, and send them forth to the females in the pasture grounds. They number and make a list of the animals fit for victims, with the foals and calves. Orders are given for the ceremonies against pestilence throughout the city; at the nine gates (also) animals are torn in pieces in deprecation (of the danger): to secure the full development of the (healthy) airs of the spring. |

| 3 | 時則訓: | 季春之月，招搖指辰，昏七星中，旦牽牛中，其位東方，其日甲乙，其蟲鱗，其音角，律中姑洗，其數八，其味酸，其臭膻，其祀戶，祭先脾。桐始華，田鼠化為鴽，虹始見，萍始生。天子衣青衣，乘蒼龍，服蒼玉，建青旗，食麥與羊，服八風水，爨萁燧火，東宮御女青色，衣青采，鼓琴瑟。其兵矛，其畜羊。朝于青陽右個。舟牧覆舟，五覆五反，乃言具于天子。天子烏始乘舟，薦鮪於寢廟，乃為麥祈實。是月也，生氣方盛，陽氣發洩，句者畢出，萌者盡達，不可以內。天子命有司，發囷倉，助貧窮，振乏絕，開府庫，出幣帛，使諸侯，聘名士，禮賢者。命司空，時雨將降，下水上騰，循行國邑，周視原野，修利堤防，導通溝瀆，達路除道，從國始，至境止。田獵畢弋，罝罘羅𦉾，餧毒之藥，毋出九門。乃禁野虞，毋伐桑柘。鳴鳩奮其羽，戴鵀降于桑，具撲曲筥筐。後妃齋戒，東向親桑，省婦使，勸蠶事。命五庫，令百工，審金鐵皮革、筋角箭幹、脂膠丹漆，無有不良。擇下旬吉日，大合藥，致歡欣。乃合㹎牛騰馬，游牝於牧。令國儺，九門磔攘，以畢春氣。行是月令，甘雨至三旬。季春行冬令，則寒氣時發，草木皆肅，國有大怨。行夏令，則民多疾疫，時雨不降，山陵不登。行秋令，則天多沈陰，淫雨早降，兵革並起。三月官鄉，其樹李。 |

《淮南子》曰：牛歧蹄而戴角，馬被髦而全足者，天也。絡馬之口，穿牛之鼻者，人也。 又曰：剝牛皮鞟以為鼓，正三軍擲賁，然為牛計者，不若服軛也。 又曰：城上視牛，如羊如豕，所居高也。 又曰：戴角者無上齒，無角者膏而兌前，豕馬之屬前小。有角者脂而兌後。牛羊后小。 又曰：季春之月，乃合騾牛騰馬，游牝于牧。 又曰：取牛膽途熱釜，即鳴矣。 又曰：牛膽途目，莫知其誰。注曰：「取八歲黃牛膽，滾獰啯寸著膽中，百日以成。因使巧工刻，像人丈夫，著目下；為女子，著頭上；為小兒，著頤下。盛以五彩囊。先宿齋，無令人知也。」 |
