You Zi said: You Zi was a disciple of Confucius. A junzi focuses on the fundamentals; when the fundamentals are established, the Way arises. Filial piety and fraternal duty—these are the roots of ren, aren't they? One must first be able to serve one's father and elder brothers; only then can ren be achieved.

Confucius said: Flattering words and an insincere appearance—how rare is ren in such a person! "Zi," meaning Confucius, "qiaoyan," means eloquent words; "lingsei," means a pleasing appearance. Both are intended to please others. Few who do this possess ren.

Zeng Zi said: Zeng Zi was a disciple of Confucius. I examine myself three times each day: Have I been disloyal in carrying out plans for others? Have I failed to be trustworthy when associating with friends? Have I not practiced the teachings passed down to me? This means that any matters transmitted, one must ask whether they have been previously studied and practiced before transmitting them.

Confucius said: To govern a state with a thousand chariots, govern means to provide political leadership and education. be respectful in one's duties and trustworthy. One who governs a state must carry out affairs with reverence and caution, and be sincere and trustworthy toward the people. practice frugality and cherish the people, frugality means not being extravagant. The state takes the people as its foundation; therefore, it must love and nurture them. Employ the people according to the proper seasons. This means not interfering with agricultural duties.

Confucius said: A disciple, when at home, should be filial; when outside, respectful to elders. He must be cautious and trustworthy, showing broad love for all people while cultivating closeness with those who embody ren. After carrying out these duties and having spare energy, he may then study literature. "Wen" refers to the writings or cultural legacies of antiquity.

Zixia said: Zixia was a disciple of Confucius named Bu Shang. When serving one's parents, one should exert all one's strength; when serving the ruler, one should dedicate one's life. This means to give complete loyalty and not cherish one's own life. When associating with friends, speak with integrity. Even if someone says they have not studied, I would certainly say that they have learned.

Confucius said: A junzi who is not dignified will lack authority; one who studies will not be rigid. Uphold loyalty and trustworthiness, associate only with those equal to or better than oneself, and when making mistakes, do not fear correction. "Zhu" means to value or hold dear. "Dan" means to fear or find difficult.

Zeng Zi said: Being cautious about the end (of life) and honoring those from afar (ancestors), the people's virtue will return to being thick/thickened. "Shenzhong" means to express complete sorrow in mourning; "Zuiyuan" means to show utmost reverence in ancestral worship. If a ruler practices these two, the people will be influenced by his virtue and all return to thickness/thickening of morality.

You Zi said: The use of li (ritual propriety) is to achieve harmony, which is most precious. This was the excellence of the ways of former kings; both small and great matters followed it. However, there are cases where this cannot be applied. To seek harmony merely for its own sake, without regulating it through li, is also not feasible. If people know that li values harmony and follow this in every matter without using li as a standard, it is also not feasible.
