唐秘書監虞世南《公子先生論》云:公子曰:「宋齊二代,廢王有五,并驕淫狂暴,前后如一,或身被殺戮,或傾墜宗社,豈厥性頑凶,自貽非命,將天之所棄用傾代業者乎?」先生曰:「夫木之性直,匠者揉以為輪;金之性剛,工人理以成器。豈人事也?惟上智下愚,特稟異氣;中庸之才,全由訓習。自宋、齊以來,東宮師傅,備員而已,貴賤禮隔,規獻無由,且多以位升,罕由德進。善乎哉!賈生之言:『昔者成王幼在襁褓之中,召公為太保,周公為太傅,太公為太師。保則保其身體,傅則傅以德義,師則導之教訓,此三公之職也。又置三少曰少保、少傅、少師,是與太子晏者也。故乃孩提有識。三公、三少固明者孝仁禮義,以導習之,遂去邪人,不使見惡行。選天下之儒士,孝悌博聞有道術者,以翼衛之,使與太子居處。故太子生乃見正事,聞正言,行正道,左右前後皆正人也。習與正人居,不能無正,猶生長齊地不能不齊言;習與不正人居,猶生長楚地不能不楚言也。』秦使趙高傅胡亥,教之獄訟,所習者非斬劓人,則夷人之三族也。故胡亥今日即位,明日射人,有忠諫者謂之誹謗,深計者謂之妖言,視殺人如刈草菅然。豈胡亥之性惡哉?彼其導之者非其理也。故選左右禪教之,最急此五。君者稟凡庸之性,無周召之師,遠益友之箴規,狎不尚之近習,以斯下質,生而楚言,覆國忘身,理故然也。」
