The Qumei Guo state had relations during the Han dynasty. Its capital, Qiemo Cheng, was located 6,800 li away from Chang'an. There were 230 households. To the northwest, it was 2,200 li to the seat of the Protector General; to the north it bordered Yuli and Dingling; to the east it bordered Baiti; to the west it bordered Persia and Jingjue; and to the south, it took about three days' journey to Xiaowan. The land had grapevines and various kinds of fruits. Its people all cut their hair short, wore guanmiao hats, small-sleeved garments; when wearing a shan (a type of robe), they left the front open and sewed it in the front. They had many cattle, sheep, mules, and donkeys. Its king, Anmo Shenpan, in the fifth year of Emperor Wu of Liang's Tongping era (524 AD), sent envoys to present tribute; it was referred to as the "Mo Guo" state. The Liang dynasty history says that this is Qiemo. To the northwest of its country were hundreds of li of shifting sands; in summer there was hot wind, which posed a danger to travelers. When the hot wind was about to arrive, old camels sensed it first; they would bray and gather together, burying their mouths and noses in the sand. People often used this as a sign, so when they saw it happening, they would quickly cover their nose and mouth with cloth. The wind was swift and fierce; in a short while it passed completely over the area. If one did not take precautions, it would certainly lead to danger or death.
